Knocking At My Front Door

I went out my front door yesterday morning to leave a package to be picked up and was checking the water status of my cactus plants on the plant table right next to my front door. What I thought was a stick in the dirt turned out to be the head of a RATTLESNAKE!

I didn’t realize it was a rattlesnake at first — at first I thought it was dead and then I moved in closer to get a better look and it moved back. I jumped back. Then I noticed its body coiled around the back of the planter.

I went in and told my mom and she asked, “Does it have a triangle head?” I said “I don’t know but I think so.” She jumped out of bed and went to have a look-see and she said, “Oh boy, I think that’s a rattlesnake.”

So what do you do with a rattlesnake at your front door: a door that gets a lot of activity with people and dogs coming and going??

I called 9-11 and they dispatched Animal Control. They took about 45 minutes to get here but thankfully the snake was still there. The Animal Control officer confirmed that it was indeed a rattlesnake, grabbed it with her tongs and put it in her bag. He was about 2 feet long and I asked if he was a baby. She said he wasn’t a baby but was a juvenile rattlesnake. With very potent venom.

As she was tying the top of the bag, I saw the snake coming out the bottom of the bag and yelled, “He’s getting out of your bag!” She acted quickly, shocked that she had a hole in the bottom of her bag and managed to get ahold of the snake and put him in a bucket and then whisked him off to release him somewhere far far from here.

I came back in the house and said “Shit, this is the most excitement I’ve had in a long time!”

I need to get out more often… 🙂

  1. AIEEEEEEEEEEE! (That was my very loud scream.) I can live without that kind of excitement. I’m amazed that anyone is brave enough to catch a rattlesnake instead of killing it. I haven’t seen a single snake since I moved to Florida, which I think is odd. Maybe they don’t like the rats. We had a lot of snakes in our garage in Illinois, but we knew they were there because we had a lot of mice–and not because we wanted them.

    • Oh yeah, snakes definitely like mice. My friend Lisa, who has chickens in her backyard, ran into a really large rattlesnake that was after either the chickens or their eggs…

    • Thanks Tric. It was certainly exciting! What a way to wake up!! I was just going to drop off the package at the front door and go back to bed. That didn’t happen! 🙂

  2. I have lizards in my yard and enjoy seeing them. One thing I don’t want to see is a snake–any snake. Especially a rattlesnake. I know they live in proximity to my area, but I’ve never seen one in my neighborhood and hope I never do.

    • Oh I love love love lizards! We have a lot around here too and I so enjoy them. Though I have to keep my dog Luca away from them. He likes to catch them and we’ve had a few “accidents”, which broke my heart!

  3. Hi, Michele!

Wow, I’m glad that story had a happy ending for you and your folks, for the animal control officer and even for the rattler. Everybody kept their cool and did the right thing. A few weeks ago I nearly stepped on a snake that was slithering across our parking garage. The next day my neighbor told me he had seen the same snake and assured me it was not poisonous. I hope he knows his snakes! Earlier this season in the Tampa area someone’s pet German Shepherd dog got bit by a rattle snake as it was trying to protect the family’s young daughter from the serpent. The dog needed treatment at the vet’s office but lived to tell the tale. I’m very thankful that you and your loved ones are AOK, dear friend Michele!

    • Hey Shady. Encountering a snake slithering in front of me would freak me out. My neighbor just told me this evening that she saw a snake going from the sidewalk into my yard the other day. I bet it was that snake that ended up at my front door. I’ve seen other snakes around the yard but they were really super small garden snakes (gray/silver snakes that were the size of an extra large worm). Never thought I’d run into a rattler here though!

Glad that German Shepherd survived and recovered the attack. See how protective the family dogs are! Love that!

  4. OMG!! That would freak me out so much – we used to get poisonous snakes in our backyard in Australia and it always terrified me. Glad it had a safe outcome and yes you can definitely live without that sort of excitement.

    • Ooh, what kind of snakes were those ones in Australia?? I would be scared to death if poisonous snakes were regular visitors in my yard. This episode has me on edge and especially scared for my dogs!

  5. Burn the house down! And move… far far away! That’s my game plan. I don’t think my heart could handle that situation. Snakes are one of my biggest fears. I used to have nightmares about them when I was little. Hopefully he was a loner and didnt bring any friends with him. You might want to be cautious just in case his buddies are lurking about.

    • Lol! Your game plan cracked me up!
I know, that’s what’s freaking me out. Is there a snake den somewhere close? I asked the Animal Control officer but she said they don’t usually den up. Hopefully he just wandered far from his home and got lost at mine…

    • Oddly, I wasn’t really afraid. Very curious. And cautiously apprehensive. I was most afraid of losing track of it and it disappearing into my foliage around the house. I have some really dense foliage that would make a great hiding spot for snakes. I may thin that out now…if I’m brave enough to get in there and start working with my hands… 🙂

  6. Wow!! such excitement,John just killed a Blacksnake here the other day. It was laying against our wall at the sun room. We kill them I sure don’t want them in my house. My friend Hannah lives a few mile down the road from me and she had a 4 ft Black snake in her house crawling across the living rm floor last year. If that would of been me I would of killed it,but she called a friend and he put it in a bag and took it somewhere and left it go.. I sure hope there isn’t any more close your house. My Dad used to say as long as there are Black snakes around Rattle snakes won’t stay..

    • My dad was just mentioning black snakes back home. I’ve never seen a black snake. I can’t imagine having one in the sun room! OMG, I would’ve been freaked out by a 4 ft snake slithering across the living room!
Now I’ll be hoping there are black snakes here…to keep the rattlers away. I’m still shocked, it being so close to the house. Why did it find my cactus table such a neat place to hang out. I have no idea how long it was there. I’m just glad I noticed it because I usually don’t go out the front door; I always use the garage. It just so happened that I went out there to leave a package for pickup. Otherwise I wouldn’t have gone out there and then the thought of one of my customers — human or dog — getting bit walking up to the door really freaks me out!

    • It blended in so well with the planter and the table and cactus, it was hard to see. At one point, we scared it and it dropped out of the planter and onto the table. At first we couldn’t see it and had no idea where it went…and it was a frantic few moments with us out there, but then we saw it coiled up at the back of the planter. I kept looking at it through the window and was so curious but I didn’t want to frighten in away before the Animal Control officer got there…

  7. OMG! I would be totally freaked out with a rattler. I used to catch garter snakes when I was young. I even saw a 6ft rat snake in my garden I had over 20 years ago. When I found it, I had a fake and touched it with the rake, when it attacked the rake, I ran like a little girl. I’m glad you are ok and your mom and hope you do not see any more rattlers.

    • OMG, I can’t imagine holding a rake that a snake was attacking! Run like a little girl: that would’ve been me too!
I had a young Boa Constrictor way back when I was in my 20s: I actually forgot about that until just now. I was young and stupid and a boyfriend talked me into us getting it and keeping it at my house! It only lasted a few weeks. I was scared of it and when he went out of town, I took it back to the pet store and returned it. Young and dumb, back before I knew about the horror of pet stores…

  8. LOL; at least it gave you incentive to be more active – elsewhere. That was a good story; hope I don’t see one on my doorstep. The cats let a small lizard race across the living room floor a couple nights ago though. At first I thought it was a baby snake; but when I noted the legs, I threw a pillow at the sleeping cat.

    • Me too Jeffrey! I’m super cautious now and looking everywhere for snakes! And it’s especially making me beware around my dense foliage and bushes…

  9. Wow! I think I would have peed myself when I saw it coming out the bottom of the bag. Good thing you had someone with quick reflexes—and that you were watching carefully!
