BATTLE OF THE BANDS: It’s a DOG vs CAT Battle Showdown! This is ROUND ONE…

SAY WHAT?? You read that right. It’s the first ever DOG vs CAT Battle of the Bands TOURNAMENT. You’re going to want to get a front row seat for this one because it’s about to go down with ROUND ONE.

So what the heck is this Dog v Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament anyway? Well, I honestly can’t remember exactly how it all came together but Mary over at Jingle Jangle Jungle started it all. We were chatting about her idea for a cat vs dog battle and you know me and dogs: I’m gonna jump all over something that has to do with dogs so I said “Hey, whaddya think of us teaming up together on this idea?” and she shot right back that she was just thinking the same thing so Voilà, we now have a major event on our hands.

This will be a THREE ROUND BATTLE culminating in a Championship Title Fight. Simply put: In today’s Round One, I’m pitting two Dog songs against each other and Mary is pitting two Cat songs against each other. The First Round will feature harder edge song versions (think Hard Rock).

Round Two will be on August 1st where we’ll both be doing it again, me doing Dog songs and Mary doing Cat songs, except this time it will be the softer sounding versions (Soft Rock type).

Round Three on August 15th will feature battles with the winners from Rounds One and Two duking it out, Hard vs Soft: so it will be a battle of a Hard-Rock Dog song vs a Soft-Rock Dog song here at my place and a Hard-Rock Cat song vs a Soft-Rock Cat song battle over at Mary’s place.

The Championship Title Fight — on September 1st — will be taking place exclusively at Mary’s Jingle Jangle Jungle where the Ultimate Showdown will happen:

DOG versus CAT!

Just how this tournament will end is anyone’s guess at this point. Gamblers: have your bookies on speed-dial to place those bets. This will be a showdown for the record books! And it is sure to spark those age-old debates: Who is better, dogs or cats? Oh boy, buckle your seatbelts because this could get crazy!

Okay, so that’s as simple as I could make it. By nature I’m a word person. Mary made a great chart that will be updated as the Tournament progresses. Here’s where we are now:

Without further ado, here is my ROUND ONE BATTLE to choose the HARD-ROCK DOG SONG winner. Contenders are Ted Nugent’s DOG EAT DOG vs Led Zeppelin’s BLACK DOG

Contender #1: DOG EAT DOG by Ted Nugent

Written by the Motor City Madman himself, this song from Ted Nugent’s second solo album Free-For-All (1976) was inspired by the 1967 Detroit riots:

Sabotage in the downtown streets

Police cars overturned

Can’t do nothing to beat the heat

And if you don’t you’ll get burned

Nugent isn’t taking a side, but looking at the riots from the perspective of a citizen who gets caught up in them. “It’s necessary to keep authority in check to some extent, but not always,” he told Sounds. “A lot of times riots are just stupidity in action. A lot of times I can’t tell you whether they are righteous or stupid and there may be occasions of both.”

Ted Nugent didn’t sing on many of his early tracks, and on this one, Derek St. Holmes did lead vocals. Nugent would often introduce the song, making it clear that he was the alpha dog in this outfit. Big surprise there, right?

In the last verse, Nugent sings:

Kamikaze from the hundredth floor

Swan dive to the street

He couldn’t handle this madness no more

He craved that sweeter meat

This represents people who can’t cope in the dog-eat-dog world and turn to suicide. “What it implies is that ain’t nobody eatin’ this dog,” he said. “I’m a part of that city world, I was for many years and I was able to deal with it and take nourishment.”

Oh brother! Listen, no matter your view of Ted Nugent, he did turn out some good music, in my opinion. I grew up on Nugent tunes, I saw him in concert twice in the 70s and although I can’t stand the guy today, I do really like a lot of his music from back then. This is one of those songs that are part of the soundtrack of my life so I thought it only fitting to include his Dog Eat Dog in this Round One battle. Here is the Hard Rock Dog Song contender #1:

Contender #2: BLACK DOG by Led Zeppelin

“Black Dog” is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, the opening track on their fourth album Led Zeppelin 4 (1971), which became the band’s best-selling album. (Note: The album itself is technically untitled, with symbols on the cover instead of words., but since it was their fourth album, it became known as Led Zeppelin 4).

A wide range of musical styles show up on the set, with “Black Dog” exemplifying the blues-rock that was the bedrock of the band’s sound. It was released as a single in the United States and in Australia with “Misty Mountain Hop” as the B-side, reaching number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 in Australia.

Music sociologist Deena Weinstein calls “Black Dog” “one of the most instantly recognizable [Led] Zeppelin tracks.”

In this song, Robert Plant is singing about a woman who appeals to his prurient interests, but is clearly no good for him – he tells himself he’d rather have a “steady rollin’ woman” come his way.

Robert Plant explained in an interview with Cameron Crowe: “Not all my stuff is meant to be scrutinized. Things like ‘Black Dog’ are blatant, let’s-do-it-in-the-bath type things, but they make their point just the same.”

The title does not appear in the lyrics, and has nothing to do with the song itself. The band worked up the song at Headley Grange, which was a mansion in Hampshire, England. Headley Grange was out in the country, surrounded by woods. A nameless black Labrador Retriever would wander the grounds, and the band would feed it. When they needed a name for this track – which didn’t have an obvious title – they thought of the canine and went with “Black Dog.”

The Retriever, despite his advanced age, was still sexually adventurous, like the song’s protagonist who reiterates his desperate desire for a woman’s love and the happiness it provides. As Plant explained to a 1972 concert audience:

Let me tell you ’bout this poor old dog because he was a retriever in his early days, and the only thing he could ever find in his late days was his old lady who lived two houses away from where we were recording. And he used to go see the old lady quite regularly, but after he’d “boogied” and everything else he couldn’t get back. And we used to carry him back.

Here is our Hard Rock Dog Song contender #2:

UPDATE NEWS FLASH: Before I forget, if anyone still even cares: here are the results from my battle last month. Before I announce that though, let me formally apologize to you all. I completely dropped the ball on this one. I put all that time into putting together a combined battle of two electonic versions and two acoustic versions of Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” and you all came over, listened to four cover versions and voted not once but twice…and then I never showed back up to tally the results and declare the winners. Shame on me! I am truly sorry about that. That is not how this is supposed to go. My only explanation is that life (or should I say Life with a capital L) got in the way and I never made it back to that battle post to even read the comments, let alone reply to the comments and then deliver the results…until just now. Hey, maybe no one really gives a shit anymore but I feel bad so, to all of you, my sincere apologies. And now, let me (finally) fill you in on the results!

The song was Drops of Jupiter by Train and the battle contenders were:

In the Electronic version category: Anthem Lights vs Matt McAndrew

In the Acoustic version category: Jess Moskaluke vs Boyce Avenue

And the winners are:

ANTHEM LIGHTS with 6 votes (over Matt McAndrew with 4 votes)

BOYCE AVENUE with 7 votes (over Jess Moskaluke with 3 votes)

btw, I really enjoyed all four of these contenders but I voted for Anthem Lights – their version just grabbed me more and the richness of their instrumentation pushed them over the top for me; and I voted for Jess Moskaluke – only three of us voted for her and many of you thought her voice was annoying. I can see that, but I liked her voice and her style and for sure I really enjoyed the piano over the guitar in her version. But she didn’t win. You all brought it home for Boyce Avenue (who I also liked a lot).

I know it was a month ago, but I really enjoyed putting that battle together. I hope you all enjoyed participating in it and I will definitely not drop the ball on any future battles. Thanks for your patience and your understanding on that one.

NOW PLEASE JOIN MARY AND ME IN WHAT WE THINK WILL BE A FUN DOG v CAT BATTLE TOURNAMENT! Give us your votes!

And remember to come back on AUGUST 1 for ROUND TWO of this fun and funky Battle of the Bands!

I’ll post the results from my ROUND ONE Hard-Rock Dog v Dog battle in 7 days…

As always, thanks for participating and ROCK ON my friends!

  1. Hi, Michele!

I went back to the previous battle to double check and, sure enough, here is what I wrote: “I vote for Anthem Lights and Jess Moskaluke.” I’m delighted to know your ears matched mine in both contests.

I love the idea behind this epic Dog v Cat band battle tourney. By the way, is Dog v Cat in any danger of being overturned by SCOTUS? 🙂 Like you I do not care much for “The Nuge” as a person, but tend to like some of his music. However I needed to knock off points for “Dog Eat Dog” for a couple of reasons. First, the song does not rock hard enough to suit my taste. It is borderline pop, in my opinion. It might have had some teeth if Ted had done the lead vocals. Secondly, there is a riff that seems somewhat derivative of the Kiss song “Hotter Than Hell” released two years earlier. While I appreciate Ted’s guitar work throughout, “Dog Eat Dog” doesn’t grab me nearly as much as the Zeppelin classic “Black Dog.” British blues-based hard rock is one of my favorite genres. I appreciate the soulful vocals, complexity and nasty quotient of “Black Dog.” I also enjoyed the story about the old black lab that was the inspiration for the song title. Plant’s platoon aims to fleas, and they deliver big time. I vote for “Black Dog!”

Thank you very much, dear friend Michele!

    • Lol! I’m just getting to tallying up the votes from Round One of the Dog v Cat BOTB Tournament and cracked up when I read your line “By the way, is Dog v Cat in any danger of being overturned by SCOTUS?” hahaha Good one Tom! VERY Good!
Not to mention “Plant’s platoon aims to fleas…” You were in rare form this day!

Thanks for your very entertaining vote Tom! The first vote in the Hard Dog Song battle goes to Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”…

  2. This is a such a fun premise, Michele! 😀 And a great way to get people coming back. Kudos to you and Mary for the idea. And, hard rock, is right up my alley! Ted Nugent did have some good songs, but Led Zeppelin and their blues/rock style have always been among my favourites. Interesting backstory about the song. 🙂 It’s “Black Dog” for me, please.

  3. MICHELE, I love this Tournament idea you and Mary have cooked up! “Having fun with this little thing!”, as an old girlfriend once said, circa 1989. (I can’t even remember now what she was referring to, but that line stuck in my mind all the way from that day to this’n.)

As I mentioned to Mary, being more canine than feline fan, I’m rootin’ for the dogs.

    >>… Listen, no matter your view of Ted Nugent, he did turn out some good music, in my opinion. I grew up on Nugent tunes, I saw him in concert twice in the 70s and although I can’t stand the guy today, I do really like a lot of his music from back then.

What’s kinda funny is that my view of him is exactly 180-degrees opposite from yours. (Not that it particularly matters.) I bought Ted’s ‘Free For All’ album in 1976 or ’77. What that album taught me was that I do NOT like Ted’s music. Even as a teenager — when I was naively impressed by the “poetic high-mindedness” of many Rock lyricists — I thought Ted’s songs were kind of bone-headed. (Today, I get a good laugh out of some of the Rock songs I thought were “deep” when my own mind and life experiences were still simple.)

I don’t care about, and don’t pay any conscious attention to, what celebrities think about politics. Most of them are ridiculously uninformed about anything other than their area of endeavor. (Nevertheless, they think their opinions on everything are just so elevated and that we should be taking their views to heart.)

I only know two things about Nugent’s political views: 1) He’s strongly Pro-2nd Amendment, and 2) he voted for Trump. Check! Check! So I like him personally, as far as those two things go. (I’ve seen lots of videos where Nugent is interviewed by people I respect, such as Alex Jones, etc., but I’ve never bothered to watch any of them. Like I said, I don’t need celebrities on either end of the spectrum to teach me anything.)

Now, Battleistically speaking, my preference — and a strong one — is Led Zepp’s ‘BLACK DOG’. I’m not generally a fan of Zeppelin’s music, either, but ‘BLACK DOG’ is one of the few songs they did that I like (the one I LOVE is ‘What Is And What Should Never Be’). It’s a pretty good rocker.

FUN FACT: I feel about Bruce Springsteen the way you do about Ted Nugent. I loved him in my late teens / early 20s. His songs then were like a soundtrack to my life, and I saw him two or three times in concert. He was something of a hero to me then. Today, I can’t even stand to look at the guy! I eventually got rid of all my Springsteen albums except for his first two, which I still play occasionally, when I’m feeling particularly generous.

    Go DOGS!

    • Hi Stephen,
Thanks for coming by to vote in Round One of our Dog v Cat BOTB Tournament! Glad you like the idea.

The only reason that celebrities’ views on politics and issues are heightened is because they have the “advantage” (wrong word but you know what I mean) of having the larger public platform and well, because they’re celebrities. When celebs get political it’s usually when they’ve already reached a level of fame and fortune that it doesn’t matter that they’re inevitably going to turn off half of the population. I don’t mind hearing what they think…
In some cases, it really is a benefit to have that kind of public reach, especially with an issue of great import. I don’t know why Janis Joplin just flashed in my head. I’m thinking maybe she used the phrase “great import” in one of her songs??

Anyway, thanks for your vote. So far it’s Zeppelin 3, Nugent 0. ut-oh…

  4. Michele!

This is going to be so much fun. I can’t wait to see how the tournament unfolds. The battle today is a bit of a no-brainer for me. I’ve never really got into Ted Nugent’s music (except for one or two songs) and I’ve always had a love affair with Led Zeppelin.

Way Back in the day, when I worked for AOL we were encouraged to get to know our computers. So many people had personal computers but were afraid to explore the settings or see what things do when you click on them. I started in the tech department, where we were encouraged to click, change, etc and see what everything does. We needed to know this stuff because people would call and say they did such and such and now they don’t know how to fix it. Well.. I found the setting for sounds and changed the startup sound on my computer at work to …

    Black Dog

Ahhhh. The good ol’ days. And that is exactly where my vote is going today.

    • Hi Mary,
That’s a cool association you have with “Black Dog”. I love when songs have such deep meanings and associations in our hearts and minds.
      I’m fearing a shut-out on this Round One horizon… 4 votes in and 4 votes for Zeppelin… 😦

  5. Cool idea for a Battle of the Bands! My compliments to you and Mary…

Interesting factoid: One of the symbols on “Led Zeppelin 4” looks like the word “zoso,” so a lot of people called it that, and I guess to this day it goes by that name informally. I have no idea what “zoso” means, but anyway…

I was in high school when “zoso” came out, and many of my classmates held it in awe, proclaiming it a masterpiece, mostly because of “Stairway To Heaven,” which, if I never hear it again, it’ll be too soon. It was good, but not quite the masterpiece everyone said it was, so “Black Dog” starts with a black mark against it.

“Dog Eat Dog” and “Black Dog” are both hard rockers performed by hard rock experts. They’re both good, but I’m going with Nuge, mostly because of the aforementioned stain against “Black Dog.”

  6. I’ve been inconsistent with blogging during my several week long vacation. You’re forgiven!

Of these songs I’d never heard the Nugent song and I was prepared to write it off. The Zep song I’ve listened to for going on something like 40 years and I still like it. But I must say that I really liked the Nugent song. I’m giving my vote to Ted.

    • Yay! Another vote for Ted! John just broke the Zeppelin blowout with his vote for Nugent and you are now adding some weight to the Hard Dog Song teeter-totter…

And how thrilled am I that I have actually turned you on to this Ted Nugent song?! You should check out the whole album (Free for All)…if and when you do, let me know if there are any others that you particularly liked…
My favorite song off that album is the title track and besides the one I’m using in the battle, I also like “Hammerdown” and the one song on the album that also featured Meatloaf: “I Love You so I Told You a Lie”.

      Thanks Lee…

  7. Michele,

I think this is an excellent idea that you and Mary are sharing. I like cats and dogs equally unless I examine personalities of one over the other then chances are good I’d go with dogs who seem to be happy all the time to see their human pets whereas cats can take or leave their owners anytime unless they are being fed. lol A hard rocker I am not. I’m giving my vote to wild man Ted simply because “Dog Eat Dog” I was able to listen to almost till the end and didn’t sound as the heavy rock as Led Zeppelin. I’ll see you on the dance floor a little later. Have a bandtastic week, my friend!

  8. Led Zeppelin all the way for me. I know it is a very familiar song but I couldn’t stand the Ted Nugent one because he started to sound repetitive and it was annoying. I love Black labs as well and happy they fed him. I am one who can;’t stand Ted Nugent from his love of Trump which is just sad but I can’t stand him because he would love to lift the ban on killing bears, wolves etc… and i can not abide someone who loves to hunt for just sport

    • I totally hear ya Birgit. Sometimes it’s hard to separate a man and his politics from his music. I have to with Ted Nugent. Like I said, I can’t stand him personally but I do dig his music. Another vote for the “Black Dog”.
