Battle of the Bands Results: “Best of My Love”

Wow, this is a first for me as a Battle of the Bands participant: my battle resulted in a Tie! The battle pitted Yvonne Elliman against Aswad for the Eagles original song Best of My Love.

The 16 votes were split right down the middle: of the responses, there were 8 votes for Yvonne Elliman and 7 votes for Aswad and then my vote for the British Reggae band brought it up to 8 for the tie.

BOTB Results: “She Drives Me Crazy”

Well, it’s time for the Battle of the Bands Results. My song choice was the Fine Young Cannibals song “She Drives Me Crazy,” pitting gothic rock band Bliss against the a cappella group the Flying Pickets.

I really had a hard time deciding on this one. I loved the techno sound of Bliss and I liked what they did with it, but I really loved the a cappella vocals of the Flying Pickets. All week long I kept saying that my vote was going to go with the Pickets and then I gave them both one last listen and almost changed my mind. But in the end, I went with the Flying Pickets as my choice. I just like the a cappella sound. I think they did a real good job with it.

That wasn’t the majority vote though. Bliss had an overwhelming win, getting 13 of the 20 votes. It was a fun battle. I really dig the song so I didn’t get sick of playing it over and over again to make my decision. 🙂

Proud Mary – BOTB Results

The results are in. I cast my vote for CCR because I like it better as a general song. If the judging were based on performance, I probably would go for Tina & Ike’s version because that’s definitely a show tune the way they do it. But if I’m basing this contest on the song itself and how it sounds to my ears, hands down I’m giving my vote to CCR. It’s just a great song to sing along to. And I love to sing along.

It looks like most people felt this way. I expected more votes for Tina and Ike but they only got a third of the votes. The ballot finished out at CCR – 13, Tina & Ike – 5. Not quite the battle that I thought it was going to be. But it was fun!

BOTB RESULTS: “Without You”

It’s time for my first Battle of the Bands Results post!

The song was “Without You” with contending versions by Badfinger and Mariah Carey:

Well, this has certainly been a great first battle! I’ve tallied up the votes and out of 16 votes, 8 voted Badfinger and 8 voted Mariah Carey. So I guess I am going to be the tie-breaking vote. I’ve been undecided all this week and I’ve just listened to each version two or three times in the last hour. As much as it pains me to say, my vote is going for Mariah. The reason being: her version is just so much more powerful than Badfinger’s. After hearing Harry Nilsson’s version for so many years, I’ve come to expect passion in the song and Mariah certainly has that. In my heart of hearts I really wanted to be able to vote Badfinger, and even moreso after reading the backstory to this song, but my ear pulls me to Mariah’s version. Badfinger’s just felt a little flat and knowing how much emotion went into the writing of the song, I didn’t think that emotion carried over into the singing of it.

So, my first battle is over and the winner is Mariah Carey. Wow.
