Monday’s Music Moves Me: ROCK & ROLL HEAD TO TOE! (#4M #MMMM)

It’s Monday and that means it’s time for MUSIC! Even more cool for me is that I’m this month’s Honorary Co-Host for Monday’s Music Moves Me blog-hop and I picked this week’s theme: Songs with Body Parts in the Title (or Songs About Body Parts).

You know I’ve been out of the game for a little while. But I haven’t lost my love of doing a 4M Series. Surprise, surprise, right? I know, quit rolling your eyes. This will be fun. I hope. When I picked this theme I had no idea there were so many dang song titles that included body parts! Well, you know me, I just couldn’t do this theme justice without exploring the entire body.

So let’s get busy with the music portion of our program and kick off the

ROCK & ROLL HEAD TO TOE SERIES!

with the initial installment: SONGS WITH HEAD IN THE TITLE.

Note: Of course most of the series will be rock (mainly in the Classic Rock genre) but there may be a few other genres making an appearance here or there over the coming weeks.

The following playlist features some of my favorite HEAD songs.

Hold Your Head Up by Argent

Head Games by Foreigner

Can’t Get It Out of My Head by ELO

Going Out of My Head by Little Anthony & the Imperials

Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears

Head Over Heels by the Go-Go’s

Head Over Feet by Alanis Morrisette

Over My Head by Fleetwood Mac

Reefer Headed Woman by Aerosmith

High Head Blues by the Black Crowes

Heads I Win, Tails You Lose by Ratt

Headlong by Queen

My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink and I Don’t Love Jesus by Jimmy Buffet

Voice In My Head by the Dixie Chicks

The Whole World Lost Its Head by the Go-Go’s

World Inside My Head by Sister Hazel

Head Above Water by Hall & Oates (Daryl Hall & John Oates)

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head by B.J. Thomas

Hard-Headed Woman by Cat Stevens

Ain’t That a Kick in the Head by Dean Martin

Heads Carolina, Tails California by Jo Dee Messina

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner by Warren Zevon

I Hung My Head by Johnny Cash

I Hung My Head by Sting

I hope you enjoy my HEAD playlist. What are your favorite HEAD songs?

I’ll continue with other body parts over the next few freebie posts.

  1. Great list! I also tried to stick to the rock genre. I was going to include Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam’s ‘Head To Toe’.. but felt it didn’t play well with the others in my playlist. That, and I wanted to limit my list to just 10. I feel a series coming on, am I right? Looking forward to it!

    • ahh, Mary: did you read the WORDS in my post?? Or just look at the song list? Because if you read the words, you’d know IT’S A SERIES. And this one is the first of several posts… 🙂

(I have Lisa Lisa’s Head to Toe in one of my other posts. There were so many Head songs so I thought I’d put that one in the upcoming TOE post!)

Thanks for being the first to hit the dance floor this morning! I’m going to bed. I have to get up in a few hours…

  2. Hi, Michele!

How’s your mom at this hour? Prayers offered.

Looks like you got this topic covered from head to toe, dear friend! After a long period of focusing on other genres, I am getting back into classic rock big time and enjoying this body parts set. The first three by Argent, Foreigner and ELO are among my all time favorites, as is “Over My Head” by Fleetwood Mac. I haven’t heard that one in decades and I thank you for posting it. You might think that smash hit by Little Anthony & The Imperials was a big Dell hit, but I don’t remember it being played on the Dell jukebox. The group’s mid 60s hits, songs composed by by Teddy Randazzo, were pop recordings, and the Dell was more about soul and R&B. It simply wasn’t as easy for th ekids to dance to songs like “Goin’ Out of My Head,” “Hurt So Bad” and “Take Me Back.” The Imperials were much bigger at the Dell in the late 50s when they released the doublesider doo-wop ballad “Tears On My Pillow” b/w “Two People in the World” (aka “Helen’s Song”). The official music videos made by Tears for Fears played heavily on the MTV style station where I worked including this one, “Head Over Heels.” Is it just me… or do The Go-Go’s seem terribly dated now, locked into that time period, while videos by another popular girl band, The Bangles, still seem fresh and relevant today? “Head Over Feet” is new to my ears, as is “Reefer Headed Woman,” “High Head Blues,” “Voice In My Head,” “The Whole World Lost Its Head,” World Inside My Head,” “Head Above Water,” ” Heads Carolina, Tails California,” “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” and both versions of “I Hung My Head.” I also don’t remember Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” but it’s my Pick To Click of the group of new-to-me songs. The band Ratt came to our TV studio and taped an interview and promos that were played back on our hard rock & metal show segment. We shot footage at the local venue where they performed. I remember this Ratt song, “Heads I Win, Tails You Lose.” As you might recall, comedy legend Milton Berle appeared as a character in the Ratt video “Round and Round.” Uncle Miltie’s nephew Marshall Berle was Ratt’s band manager at the time.

I never realized there were so many “Head” songs, dearie. I know there will be even more by the time you get to the “Heart” of this series. Thanks for the info and entertainment, dear friend Michele. I will continue to pray for your dear mother’s full recovery.

    • Thank you so much Tom! I enjoyed reading your awesome comment today. It’s been a horribly long week — Mom is still in the hospital and I need to hear from the doctor about her CT scan from yesterday.

I had forgotten that Milton Berle starred in Ratt’s Round and Round video. I just went and watched it again. Funny stuff. That’s cool trivia about his nephew being Ratt’s manager. He also played one of the female characters in the video, right? I’m pretty sure that was him in drag.

I never really gave thought to comparing the Go Go’s and the Bangles as far as their “freshness” goes. I’ll have to think on that one…

I’m so glad that I could turn you onto several new-to-you songs! It’s not often that happens! “Reefer Headed Woman” is one of my favs from Aerosmith’s Night in the Ruts album (1979). It’s a blues song from the 40s. Aerosmith does some good bluesy stuff.

I was introduced to “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” on the David Letterman show during Warren Zevon’s last appearance on the show. Apparently it is Letterman’s favorite Zevon song and he requested that he include the song in his set that night.

Interesting that your Pick to Click in the new-to-you songs is Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head”. I love that song! I FEEL that song a lot! I feel like I’m often getting kicked in the head! Ay-yi-yi…

Thank you my friend for coming by and leaving this great comment. Glad you enjoyed my Head playlist. Guess which body part I’m going to feature in tomorrow 4M post??

Thank you also, and especially, for your continued prayers for my Mom. We need prayers now more than ever so I’m grateful to you for that.
      Enjoy your weekend…

  3. Are there any “Head” songs left? I think you’ve found them all, at least all recorded by the 80’s Hair Bands. Hold your head up is a classic and a favorite of mine. Dipping all the way back to my youth, Little Anthony and the Imperials sing about something that we’ve all experienced. We have fallen in love and just can’t think about anyone or anything else, Even if the object of our affection doesn’t seem to know that we exist. Have a blessed week.

    • Thanks for coming by Driller! And after presenting 35 Head songs, it’s hard to believe that there are still a WHOLE BUNCH of head songs out there! That’s what is so cool for me in putting this series together is just how many body parts songs are out there.

I think of all those songs, my favorite is “Hold Your Head Up” too.

Enjoy your weekend and see you early next week…

  4. Michele,

Holy smoke, girl! You really did come up with the song titles using ‘head’. I can’t believe you didn’t stumble on ‘Head to Toe’ by Olly Murs but they aren’t in the classic rock genre so that might be why they didn’t pop up on your radar. This is an incredible playlist, so I’m just going to let it play in the background while I visit a few non-mewsic bloggers. BTW, don’t worry about trying to make your rounds with your dear mama on your mind. Sending her warm belated well wishes for a good Mother’s Day even though wasn’t the best given her health situation. I hope she feels better soon. I have her in my prayers. Have a boogietastic week, dearie! xx

    • Cathy, thank you so much for keeping my mom in your prayers. We’re still worried and not out of the woods yet. She’s still in the hospital. And I couldn’t go see her today because I have something coming on (sore throat, etc) but started antibiotics today so hopefully they will kick in soon. I just want to get her home! And better! I want her to feel good and be happy, not miserable.

Yeah, I never heard of Olly Murs until I saw/heard him at your Head to Toe playlist. He’s good! Thanks for the introduction.
I hope you enjoyed all of my playlist while you were bouncing around the blogosphere. 🙂
      See you on Monday!

      • Michele, I’m sorry you’re under the weather and unable to visit your mom but pays to be cautious. The elderly are more susceptible to picking up stuff. We’ll keep those prayers going!

Yes, I enjoyed your comprehensive playlist. I knew you’d have a nice set to get my entire body moving and I was right! Have a good day & see ya tomorrow on the dance floor!

  5. Who knew there were that many songs with “Head” in the title? Great list, Michele! I can see where this series will be popular. 😀 I’m not participating today, but will hopefully see you on Wed. for BOTB. Cheers!

    • Hi Debbie, Thanks for coming by and checking out the Head list. It was amazing to see how many songs have the word Head in the title. I only touched on a few, there are over 100 I think I saw out there at various lists. This is going to be a fun series so I hope you enjoy it.

I LOVED your battle, btw. It was nothing short of kick-ass!

Hope you’re having a good weekend. Two dogs just arrived and I’m relishing in the solitude of just having these two and my two through the weekend and until next Thursday when the Memorial Day Weekend dogs start to arrive. Then all hell will break loose! 🙂

    • I am so sorry that you didn’t get the message that the theme date had moved. I looked up your post from back then and you came up with some really cool body part songs.
Thanks for coming by. Have a great weekend.

  6. Michele, I think you got just about every song written about body parts ever written… Excellent list! I’ll be listening to this for a while…

Sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope she gets out of the hospital and into another facility soon. Hospitals are noplace for a sick person. After I got out of intensive care after my stroke, I managed to get pneumonia and ended up back in the ICU. She’s in my thoughts and prayers (I’ve been saying that a lot lately, unfortunately…)

    • Thank you so much John. Thoughts and prayers is what we need more than anything right now. I am very grateful for your prayers for her. She’s still in the hospital and I so hope she gets better soon. This is the hard part of life, the aging part. How we take for granted our health in our youth, huh? Getting old is Hell and even worse, it’s watching a loved one succumb to the ravages of time.

      Glad you enjoyed my playlist.
      Have a great Sunday…

  8. After hearing The Zombies in the broadcast on HBO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions, I was very much in the mood for Hold your Head Up (although, alas, it is a shortened version). Apart from that, of your picks, my favorite would be Tears for Fears Head over Heels although, again, it seemed to be missing the last few seconds that the version I am used to has. I could listen to 80’s music all day long.

    • Hey Alana, thanks for coming by. It’s getting that time of year here where I start yearning to head back up to my home state. I’ll just say it now: i envy you for your temperatures up there right now! It’s already gross muggy out down here: you go out fresh and come back in 15 minutes later feeling like a damp washcloth. I have a feeling one of these days I’ll be relocating. The older I get, the less I tolerate the heat…

Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” reminds me of my college years… or just after them. The song came out right after I graduated and headed back home to start the job search (after a few months of relaxing and rejuvenating). A good pick for your favorite from my list.

Hope you are having a good weekend.
