Monday’s Music Moves Me – Spotlighting the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

Wow, it feels weird jumping right back into a blog hop after having been MIA for so many months. Life has been challenging these last few months, in so many ways, and one of these days I might do a post about it all. But before anything, I want to say how much I’m looking forward to reconnecting with all of you. I’ve missed you guys! And please don’t take my absence and my lack of visits to your blogs personally; I didn’t visit anybody. I may have dropped in once or twice to a couple of folks but essentially I was completely off the blogging grid.

I was so off the grid that when I was tweaking some of my pages the other day I literally forgot how to do things, like work with theme menus and even —shocking! —- I had to do a refresher on creating a YouTube playlist! Talk about coming out of the fog!

Anyway, I’m excited that May is my month to be guest co-host and conductor to the Monday’s Music Moves Me hop. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers over this time and especially thank you to those who dropped in to check on me and say hi with an email or Facebook message. I truly appreciated those connections.

I’m going to ease back into this slowly, for my own sanity (and probably to the relief of many of you out there!) 😆 So let’s do this already!

This first Monday in May is a 4M Freebie, meaning there is no specific theme to follow and we can present any kind of music we want.

I was channel-surfing the other night and happened upon HBO which was airing the 34TH ANNUAL ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONYNaturally that stopped me in my tracks and I watched and enjoyed the whole thing. During the show I decided to feature the 2019 Inductees for my Freebie feature.

In case you missed it, this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn NY on March 29th. For those who may not be familiar, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie, recognizes and archives the history of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, engineers, and other notable figures who have had some major influence on the development of rock and roll. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established on April 20, 1983, by Ahmet Ertegun, founder and chairman of Atlantic Records. In 1986, Cleveland was chosen as the Hall of Fame’s permanent home. (On a side note, my favorite Sirius XM Radio station, Classic Vinyl, (channel 26) is broadcast live 24/7 from the R&R Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Having spent a number of years of my career working in radio (at stations in Washington DC and Austin, Texas), whenever I hear the on-air personalities mention where they are broadcasting from, I always think how cool it would be to work for a radio station located inside the R&R Hall of Fame! That’s some major atmosphere there.)

This year’s inductees are, in no particular order:

• The Cure

• Def Leppard

• Janet Jackson

• Stevie Nicks

• Radiohead

• Roxy Music

• The Zombies

The show was quite good, with several decent performances and some interesting and inspiring acceptance speeches. You can find many of them on YouTube. I’m including the one that impressed me the most, mainly because I learned something about one of the band members that I was surprised I didn’t know already. More on that later.

My playlist today features my favorite songs by the 2019 Inductee artists. I hope you enjoy it. Without further ado, here is some great rock and roll for your listening pleasure. It’s a long playlist so you can just hit Play All and listen to great songs by these inductees or go through the list and pick out which ones you want to hear. There are some neat videos too so be sure to check them out. As far as the videos goes, I’m curious to find out which is your favorite.

That was some great rock and roll, no? You can find the performances from the Induction Ceremony event online. There are lots of YouTube videos of the various performances and speeches from that night. Here’s the induction speech that I liked best, from lead singer Joe Elliot of Def Leppard. Below is the entire speech and it’s really good, particularly starting at the 5:00 minute mark, when Joe talks about the band’s rise to success, the tragedies endured and the strength and loyalty that kept them together all these years. It gave me a whole new appreciation of Def Leppard.

As to what I didn’t already know about this group: I noticed while Def Leppard was performing during the ceremony that the drummer, Rick Allen, didn’t have his left arm.  Then his car accident that caused the loss was referenced in Joe’s speech. The accident happened at the end of 1984 and I wondered how in the world I hadn’t heard about that news, being so tapped into rock as I was back then. But that was also the month that I graduated from college and was preoccupied with moving from Ohio back to my home in Niagara Falls. I was curious so I dug around online for some info and found some fabulous interviews with Rick Allen after his accident and recovery. His story is beyond inspirational.

The basic facts of the accident (per Wikipedia):

On the afternoon of 31 December 1984, Allen was involved in a car accident with his then-girlfriend Miriam Barendsen on the A57 road in the countryside a few miles west of Sheffield. While trying to pass another car at a high speed, he lost control of his Corvette C4, which hit a dry stone wall and entered a field. He was thrown from the car because his seatbelt had been improperly fastened, causing his left arm to be severed. His girlfriend suffered head, neck and spine injuries from severe whiplash. Doctors initially reattached Allen’s arm, but because of an infection, it had to be re-amputated. His right shoulder was also severely broken in the accident.

There is a good series of interviews with Rick talking about his accident, the devastation of a drummer losing an arm and how that might surely be the end of his career and his place in the band, but how he overcame it and continued to play drums using his left foot as a substitute for his missing limb. It’s really incredible so if you’re interested in seeing the 3-part interview video series, here they are:

So that’s it from this end. Thanks for letting me come back into the group and kick off my comeback as your 4M conductor/co-host for the month of May. Next week will be my theme of songs about body parts (or with body parts in the title). Hope to see you for that. And I’m looking forward to making the rounds this week to check out your Freebie posts and to reconnect with you all.

Monday’s Music Moves Me (4M) is a blog hop hosted by Marie of X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by Cathy of Curious as a Cathy and Stacy of Stacy Uncorked and Colette of Jamerican Spice and Alana of Ramblin’ with AM. Be sure to stop by and visit the hosts and the other participants listed below:

  1. Michele,

Welcome back to Blogosphere, my friend! We’re so excited to have you for this month’s honorary co-host on the dance floor. I’m going to make this a brief message because I have a few appointments this morning and I don’t have time to listen to your mewsic but I promise (and you know I’m good for my word) I’ll be back tomorrow to plug into your tunes. Take it easy getting back into the groove. I know how hard it after a long absence. Have a boogietastic day!

    • Thanks sweet girl! I’ll look forward to your return visit and then we can get down and boogie. 🙂 Hope all your appointments went well. I look at my calendar most days and just sigh: so many dang doctor appointments and so little time!

  2. Hi, Michele!

Welcome back to Blogland, dear friend! It’s great to see you. You’ve been missed!

I enjoyed this playlist of your favorite songs by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees for 2019. My three favorite artists in your group are Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks and The Zombies. Stevie Nicks appeared at a Tampa Bay venue when I was working at that MTV style station, and I edited and voiced promos for her show. She is one of the most exciting, dynamic and intriguing artists of our time, a witchy woman, and I hope you caught her guest role on American Horror Story: Coven. My top faves by Stevie from this set are “Stand Back,” “Edge of Seventeen” and “Stop Draggin'” with Tom Petty and his band.

Singles by The Zombies rank high on the list of favorite songs from my teenage years while Roxy Music’s highest-charting U.S. single “Love Is the Drug” is one of the most memorable rock songs of my mid 20s. Janet Jackson’s videos, particularly “Nasty” and “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” were also played in heavy rotation at the music station where I worked. It is at this point in the convo that one of my pet peeves surfaces. If you listen to the backing tracks on Janet’s hit singles they are much same same, highly derivative, a hit sound formula used again and again by Janet and other artists during that period. Moreover, Janet is an artist in the R&B, pop and hip hop genres. If she can be recognized for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall, then why does the committee still have blinders on year after year when it comes to Neil Sedaka, one of the great architects of the pop style of rock & roll, a prolific singer and songwriter? It simply isn’t fair that Neil is overlooked every year including again in 2019. Are they waiting to honor him posthumously?

My favorite artist of all in today’s post is Def Leppard. When so many 80s hair bands consisted of pretty boys singing pop and pretending it was rock, Def Leppard was the real deal, just rough enough to suit me, even on their power ballads. “Photograph,” “Rock Of Ages,” “Pour Some Sugar,” Hysteria,” “Animal,” “Love Bites” and “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak” are all pop metal classics. Def Leppard videos were played by the veejay who hosted our late night Headbangers Ball segment and I borrowed techniques used in their videos to produce my own. I enjoyed the induction speech and the interviews with Rick Allen – “The Thunder God” – the band’s one armed drummer. I knew about the loss of Rick’s arm all these years because our veejay made a point of discussing it on the air when playing their vids. Rick’s story is inspiring and his advice empowering. Never give up. When life knocks you down, as it surely will, get up and get busy. Don’t allow time for self pity. Drifting off topic for a moment, I encourage rock loving you to watch The Dirt, the 2019 film that follows the evolution of Mötley Crüe. It’s an eye opener and an ear opener.

Thank you, dear friend Michele, and have a wonderful week!

    • Hey my friend! Thanks for coming by. It’s wonderful to be reading a comment from you again. It’s been so long. I wasn’t kidding when I got back into putting this post together that I had forgotten how to maneuver the process of it all. It perplexed me for a minute or two (or 10-15 to be precise) and it was weird.

Like you, my very favorite of all these inductees is Def Leppard. Theire music is awesome and I was thrilled to see their performances during the ceremony and then to research their stories in compiling this post. Very impressive group of guys for sure!

I do remember Stevie Nicks role in the American Horror Story’s “Coven”. I never saw the final episode of that season, can you believe it? I don’t know how it ended!!! Watched every episode and for some reason never saw the finale. Good grief! I am actually a few seasons behind on that show so need to get caught up. It didn’t renew though, did it? I haven’t heard anything about that show in quite some time.

You bring up a great point regarding why Janet Jackson and not Neil Sedaka. I would think that’s now being investigated or at least questioned. There are so many great artists and bands yet to be inducted. Will be interesting to follow. Thanks for bringing that up.

Thanks again for giving my “comeback post” a read and thanks for you great comment. Talk soon!

  3. Welcome back, Michele! It’s so nice to see you here, again. You were missed, my friend! ❤

It's about time The Zombies got inducted into the R&RHF! Great playlist of all the inductees.

I knew the Def Leppard story, having watched the documentary, HYSTERIA. We saw them live in 2011 and were blown away by Rick Allen’s drumming skills. Like you, it gave me a whole new appreciation for Def Leppard. And, it doesn’t hurt that Joe Elliot is absolutely gorgeous in person! 😀

That same year we took a road trip to the Rock Hall in Cleveland. What a fabulous place! Spent the entire day there. They have the most amazing memorabilia, like Janis Joplin’s Porche, stage costumes through the years, guitars, etc. etc. Their featured exhibit (it changes every year) was ‘Women of Rock’. Unfortunately, they don’t allow you to take pictures, but I got some cool souvenirs, including a tie-dyed T-shirt that says IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD. 😀

Here’s hoping you and your mom are doing well. Have a great week!

    • Lucky you, getting to spend a whole day at the R&R Hall of Fame! I plan to make it a destination point for an upcoming excursion journey, whenever that opportunity presents itself. Patiently waiting…. 🙂
Re: what you saw while there reminds me of an awesome exhibit I saw a few years back at the Lyndon Johnson (LBJ) library called “Sign of the Times: Life in the Swinging 60s”. It was chock full of goodies from that amazing decade that really took me back to my youth. Lots of music stuff (concert posters, rock artist concert costumes, go-go girls performing behind glass, a VW Van complete with painted peace signs and flowers, etc). It was fabulous. One exhibit there now that I must see is a Grammy Museum exhibit celebrating the 60th anniversary of Motown. Exhibit synopsis:
“Curated by the GRAMMY Museum®, Motown: The Sound of Young America is the first major museum exhibition to embrace all facets—music, culture, and politics—of the 1960s biggest sounds in soul. Visit the exhibition at the LBJ Library to explore the evolution of the label, view personal artifacts from some of its biggest artists, and do your take on some of Motown’s biggest hits.”
      http://www.lbjlibrary.org/press/motown-is-coming-to-the-lbj-presidential-library

I need to get one of those t-shirts: “IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD!” I felt like a teenager again the other day when I pulled into my driveway and Supertramp’s “Bloody Well Right” was playing on the radio. I had the windows down and just sat there and jammed out with the volume cranked way up until the end of the song. Yep, loud is good! 🙂

Thanks for coming by. Looking forward to reconnecting and catching up with you! ❤

  4. Welcome back! I will watch and listen to your playlist later when I am working in my studio. I did know about the accident to Rick Allen because of the movie “Hysteria” that they did. That’s a good one too if you get a chance to see it. Stevie Nicks is my idol and my muse so I was very happy to see her get chosen. I’ll have to research YouTube for her induction speech. The Cure is a new favorite. Don’t know how I missed them before. Hope that things are on the upswing for you.

  5. HOKEY-SMOKE! Wonders never cease!

Welcome home, MICHELE! I was just thinking about you a couple days ago and wondering if you’d ever return. (Hate to admit it but… I was beginning to have doubts.) So nice to see you again in our corner of the Blogosphere. (Can a “sphere” have corners? I’ll leave that question to brighter minds than mine.)

I hope you’re doing well in mind, body, and Spirit.

Lemme know when I should add you back to the BOTB link list, Michele. Just say the word (“bird” is the word) and you’ll be back where you belong. We’ve missed you on the musical battlefields!

  9. Michele,

Per my promise, I’m baaaack! 😉 I think it’s interesting that you featured The Cure. I dropped in on Patrick from Adventures in Weseland and he shared a few of their songs. I know the band by name but never was a big fan of theirs. Def Leppard isn’t a group I listened to back in the day, other than the occasional airtime it got on the radio. They do have a few great songs which I appreciate more now than I did it the time. Rick Allen’s story is amazing and I had no idea that he lost his arm which didn’t slow the dude down. He figured out a way to keep playing the drums. Now, that’s determination and commitment. I’m not sure what qualifies a rock band to be inducted into the RNRHoF but of the groups listed certainly agree with placing Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, & The Zombies – these artists totally blow ya out of the water with their mewsical talent! I always enjoyed JJ’s mewsic but it seems her hits are a lot less than my favorites from the inductee list. Just so you’ll know, I listened to your whole playlist while I worked on my mother’s Mother Day card and for DD#2’s birthday next week. 🙂 Thanks for joining the best cyber-block party this month as an honorary co-host. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

    • Hey Cathy, thanks for coming back! And thrilled to hear that you listened to my whole playlist. Those must be some fabulous cards that you made, because that’s a lot of time to listen to 35 songs! Send me some pictures of them.

So glad you appreciated learning about Rick Allen’s story. Like I mentioned, I was so surprised that I didn’t know that fact. When the camera panned over him during their performance on the show I thought “Wait, is that drummer missing an arm??” I thought surely not, I must be seeing things. And then when his accident was referenced in the speech I went digging to find out more. Amazing story of an amazing man who persevered through an unimaginable loss for someone in his profession…and then the fact that the group was so close and so tight that they all stuck together and rallied to help and support their friend. It’s really tough for bands to stick together: you so often hear about personality conflicts and creative differences causing the demise of groups; to see this kind of brotherhood was inspiring for sure. They are indeed a gold standard of success!

As for Janet Jackson, I definitely liked her early stuff. I pretty much lost touch with her music after the 80s. My favs of hers are Nasty and What Have You Done for Me Lately. She is an incredible dancer. I think that talent was in her genetic makeup. She and her brother Michael had some of the best dance moves of all musicians. The other thing that is striking is how she seemed to follow suit with her brother in terms of plastic surgery. Hate to say it but she shouldn’t have had any work done. So many people really end up ruining their looks with excessive plastic surgery. (Melanie Griffith ruined her career I think with her plastic surgeries. She’s just one of many. Kenny Rogers comes to mind also. And Cher. I wish Cher would’ve left her natural beauty join her on her amazing journey of success. She was way more gorgeous back in the day (her early days with Sonny). Just go back and watch some of those videos from the Sonny & Cher show. If I looked like she did back then, I never would’ve let a scalpel touch my face! ). Do you think Janet Jackson ruined her natural beauty with plastic surgery? Just curious.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and for your friendship these last few months. I sure did appreciate you reaching out and emailing me. You’re the best! Love ya Girl!

  10. Look who’s finally here! ‘Tis I, the slowpoke of the group. Truth is, I’m drowning in email and responses and having trouble keeping up. I think I may have been a little bit behind before the month of April, and then I had a whole slew of First World problems. You can read all about them in my A2Z Reflections post, if you care to.

It’s so good to have you back! I have missed you tremendously. Now I dont mean to rush you, but your presence is needed in the BOTB world. It seems that some of the boys have forgotten how to ‘Rock’. I don’t mind their choices, but enough already! We need to get back to rock n roll!

I was happy to see all of these bands inducted this year. The only band I wasn’t familiar with was Roxy Music.

Gotta run.. still about 1000 emails behind… might have to start reading with the delete key.

    • 1000 emails??? Ugh! Sometimes I hate email. But I’d much rather email than talk on the phone so no complaints here. Getting familiar with the Delete key is a good thing!

I will most definitely go back and read your A-Z Reflections post. I didn’t visit anyone during the A-Z. Having done three consecutive years with that Challenge I obviously wasn’t in a position to partake this year. It’s a huge commitment and when life is throwing curve balls left and right and your schedule is overwhelming, there just ain’t no way to do a decent job with the A-Z. One has to be completely committed to invest the time to do it right or it just isn’t fulfilling. I don’t even know what my friends A-Z themes were! What was yours??

I had to laugh at your comment as to why you need me back in the BOTB fold. I will definitely be back for the battle on the 15th. Have no idea what I’m going to feature but I have some ideas and have been making notes over the months.

Re: Roxy Music: I love those songs that I posted by them. I don’t know a ton about Roxy Music other than really digging the songs I included in my playlist. I don’t know why I get Bryan Ferry (Roxy’s lead vocalist and songwriter) confused with Gary Glitter (Rock & Roll Part 2 and Do You Wanna Touch Me). Maybe because they’re both from British Glam Rock groups? I hate to confuse the two because Gary Glitter is a horrible pedophile, convicted of child rape and sex abuse and child pornography.

Looking forward to catching up! Gotta run now and take the dogs out and feed them breakfast. The Whippet is barking and he has a very shrill bark. It hurts my ears! Love him though. 🙂

And thank you for the comment on my post – comparing Keith Whitley to Conway doesn’t bother me at all – he’s actually the only voice I think comes close to Conway’s! (And by the way, Conway needs to be in the R&R HOF too! He’s already in the Country, Songwriters, and Rockabilly HOFs.)

  13. Hey, now, I’m the official slowpoke of getting here . But here I am now, saying how happy I am to have you back. Because we were in a motel room the night the Induction aired on HBO, we were able to see it (we normally don’t get HBO) and I enjoyed the show very much (except husband insisted on changing the channel for Janet Jackson’s segment, and I didn’t fight him on it – sorry, Janet Jackson fans!) I also have to admit (as much as I love the 80’s) that I am not a great fan of the Cure but I enjoyed their performance. And Def Leoppard! What can I say? I didn’t know about the arm, but husband did, and filled me in – it was so amazing to see Rick Allen in action. They, and Roxy Music, were the highlights of the evening for me. Wonderful seeing “all the young dudes (and dudettes)” in action again.
