Battle of the Bands with the DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN BATTLE OF THE SEXES

It’s mid-month already! How did that happen? It seems it’s been happening more and more lately, this flyin’ time thing. I find myself saying “Stop the bus! I wanna get off!” … I just want to take minute and breathe. Do you know what I mean?

So I’m going to grab that minute while I can. After dealing with one crisis after another over here I need to take a break. I’m going to pull back from blogging for a few months, at least until after the New Year. Today’s battle, the culmination of my Do You Know What I Mean Battle of the Sexes, will be my last for 2018.

So let’s talk about this battle: One of those crises mentioned above caused me to miss posting the Results for the Female round earlier in the month. Let me fill you in on how that ended. If you were following the comments, you might already know how it ended: Between Gwen McRae and Genya Raven, poor Gwen took a thumpin’. The battle was nearly a shutout but for the vote cast for Gwen by John. Genya Raven handily captured the win in the Female round with a 9 to 1 final tally (including my vote).

And now we have our final duel in declaring the best cover of Lee Michaels’ hit song “Do You Know What I Mean.” Will it be the version with male vocals or female vocals? While I think most will agree that no one does it better than the original recording artist. After all, Lee Michaels, who wrote, performed and produced the song, took it to #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the Cash Box Top 100 in the summer of 1971. The song also closed the year with an impressive finish garnering a rank of #19 on Billboard’s Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1971.

You’ll get to decide which sex does it better as we kick off this Do You Know What I Mean Battle of the Sexes as our two finalists take the stage. First up is the male contender:

Contender #1:  Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys

As a quick reminder: Kevin Naquin is a Cajun accordion player in south Louisiana from Ossun, Louisiana. Naquin is the lead singer and accordion player in the Cajun band Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys. In 2000, he won the CFMA – 2000 Album of the Year with his album “Pour La Premiere Fois” and CFMA – 2000 Song of the Year. He has recorded with Swallow Records and Bayou Groove Productions. He released a version of this song on his 2014 album, No Guarantee.

And here is this battle’s female contender:

Contender #2:  Genya Ravan

Genya Ravan, a.k.a. Goldie (born Genyusha Zelkovicz; April 19, 1945) is an American rock singer and producer. She was lead singer of The Escorts, Goldie & the Gingerbreads, and Ten Wheel Drive. In 2013, Genya released an album entitled Cheesecake Girl and this cover of the Lee Michaels hit is from that album:

Now it’s up to you to declare the winner in the Battle of the Sexes for Best Cover of Lee Michaels’ “Do You Know What I Mean”.

TIME TO VOTE! Which version gets your vote, the Female contender or the Male contender?

When you’re done voting, please visit these other BOTB participants and check out their cool battles:

Thanks for your participation and your votes! Voting will be open until midnight on November 22nd and I’ll post results shortly thereafter. Until then, Rock On my friends…

  1. Well darn! You’ll be off the blog for a while? I hate to hear that, but I understand. I keep thinking along those terms too, but I’m obsessed with clearing out my BOTB queue. I don’t know that I ever will considering I keep adding new songs. Sometimes we just have to throw up our hands and say “I’m outta here!” I wish you well. Still I hope you might keep popping in with BOTB posts.

Glad to hear that Genya won. Now that leaves us with a tough choice.

Like I’ve heard mentioned by others in the past, my tastes tend to lean toward the sound of a male singer and in this Battle that remains the case. Genya’s very good, but I’d rather listen to Kevin’s version. And he has the fiddle which for me is an added draw.

    A vote for Kevin Naquin.

  2. Hi Michele; I hope your life calms down a bit and you’ll be able to come back to the Blogosphere sooner than you think. You’ll be missed, but most of us understand how it is. How’s your shoulder doing? Email me anytime if you want to talk.

I’m glad to know Genya was victorious and I’m voting for her to take it all, here. She rocks!

  3. Howdy, MICHELE. We BOTBers are gonna miss ya! I hope you’re not gone long, and maybe you’ll still be able to contribute your $0.02 to Battles even when you’re not running one of your own. Take care o’ yaself!

This Battle didn’t cause me no consternation. It’s a terrific song and both recordings are good, BUT!….. I most definitely prefer KEVIN’s take on it. I liked all the little musical breaks and I felt it had a much cleaner sound. Genya’s recording went with more of a “wall of sound” approach, and that doesn’t appeal to me as much.

See ya when yer back and have more “play time” on yer hands.

You know I am gonna miss you most of all. but I truly get it. You know those important papers that I needed to fill out 6 weeks ago? Yup, still not done. Every day, I get up and bust my ass just trying to keep up, and most days just fly right on by. I’d take time off as well, but I fear that I will only take long naps and not get anything done!

Another example is this here battle. You know I opened up your blog, read it, listened to the first song and then my computer needed a swift kick in the butt… so I did a reboot. By the time it came back to life… I was distracted by something else shiny (more like something dull that needed polishing!) I was halfway through the distraction when I remembered I needed to come back here and finish listening so I could cast my vote.

So yeah. I totally get it. What are you going to do with your time? Will you have surgery and more PT? Plus…. it’s the holidays. Who has time for the holidays? I vote we move them to a more convenient time!.

Now, on to the battle before I forget again…

I am rooting for the boys this time. Do you know what I mean? This was a great idea. I’m glad that you stuck it out.

Looking forward to your next post!

  5. Michele,

I understand hectic lives. Ours is like that, too. I hope we both find some calm in our world after the new year rings in but who am I fooling I’m sure it’ll follow closely on our heels knowing the kind of luck I have. lol

I can’t say I’m crazy about these covers but I think I like slightly better Contender #1. I give my vote to Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys!

Enjoy the holiday season. I’ll be thinking of you, my lovely friend. Be happy & blessed always! 😉

  6. Hoping all works out well for you and will look forward to the new year when you return. Take it easy as best as you can. Life can be daunting at times. I have to go with Kevin’s version which I liked better because it sounded cleaner. Genya is great but it didn’t grab me as much.

  7. Hey girl, I’m the 1st person to be understanding about needing time off. You may recall I did the same thing a while back and it really helped. So enjoy the holidays! Relax! We will wait for you to return and miss you while you’re gone.

In the meanwhile, I’m lovin’ the KEVIN version and you are correct – no one beats the original.

    Take care, my friend.

  8. Hi, Michele!

I hope I’m not too late to cast my vote. It was more difficult to decide on a winner this time because I voted for both of these contenders in the preliminary rounds. Both artists recorded great covers of a rock classic. Kev & the Playboys came close to snagging my vote, but I am a sucker for female rockers, and Goldie (Genya Ravan) delights me even more with her version. With Genya’s delightfully unrefined vocals plus an arrangement that reminds me of “Hot Legs” by Rod Stewart, Genya won me over. I vote for Genya Ravan!

Thank you for understanding my need to break away for a period of bereavement, dear friend. I will resume blogging with a music post of my own tomorrow. See you then!

  9. I like Kevin Naquin’s version more because I like the Motown groove going on. The vocals on both songs, in my own opinion, aren’t that great but Kevin’s vocals are more tolerable.

  10. Life can be so stressful at times so my thoughts are with you and I know all will work out even the tough stuff. If you have support, lean on them because you will need that for strength. I hope you are not gone long but you need to take all the time you need. Now for this song choice…I go with Kevin because it sounded polished and well done. The gal’s voice didn’t sound strong enough for me and it felt like she was singing in some dive bar.
