We are wrapping up August with a fun Monday’s Music Moves Me theme from this month’s Spotlight Conductor, Mary of Jingle Jangle Jungle. She’s challenged us to feature songs with beverages in the titles. Well, you know me, Bar Queen Extraordinaire. Although it was a while ago, my bar, the Pond Springs Saloon, was a cool beer & wine joint nestled in a northwest Austin neighborhood, complete with a few pool tables, three dart boards and a kickass jukebox, and was home to a bunch of Austin-area locals who liked to hang out in a laid-back establishment. A lot of folks would come in for our famous “fish-bowls,” huge frozen schooners iced in the freezer and filled to the brim with ice cold draft beer.
It was fun to fulfill a long-time dream of creating a neighborhood bar reminiscent of the Town of Niagara/Western New York and Pennsylvania bars and beer joints that I hung out in growing up, first when in tow with my parents who liked to stop and have a few beers with family and friends every now and again, and then when I was sowing my own wild oats in my late teens and early 20s. Although my place was in Texas, it definitely had that “Buffalo-feel”, not only in attitude but in decor too, as evidenced by the Buffalo Bills memorabilia that served not only to showcase my Buffalo pride but also to taunt the resident Dallas Cowboys fans.
Folks came in to hang with friends, to laugh and tell jokes, to share life’s trials and tribulations, to bitch and complain, to spout life philosophies, to boast and embellish life stories, to blow off a little steam, to flirt and try to hook up, to cry in their beers, to drink and sometimes often get drunk and act a fool…All that and other things that people like to do in their favorite home-away-from-home drinking establishment. They sought — and found — a place where everyone knew their names. [We even had our own resident “Norm” (a Cheers reference].
So in that spirit, I’ve opened a virtual bar here at Angels Bark. Here you’ll find a menu of great music categorized and tailored to your beverage of choice. Don’t forget your dollars for the jukebox! Let’s start with an introduction to the overall atmosphere where all kinds are welcome (well, almost all kinds. You really covered this theme. There are undoubtedly more, but I’d have to do a lot of heavy thinking on this. The first song that popped into my mind was “Bad Sneakers” by Steely Dan because I thought Pina Colada was part of the title–but I guess it’s not.
Then I thought of the King of Champagne music Lawrence Welk. I recalled his theme song and figured that it might have something to do with champagne and sure enough that song is called “Bubbles in the Wine.”
Today I posted the lyrics to my song which I’ll be “debuting” in my next Battle of the Bands. Hope you’ll stop by and give me your thoughts.

It reminds me especially of my neighbor across the street when I was a kid: she LOVED Lawrence Welk and I remember her talking about the show every week. It was a real treat hearing it again.

Hiya John. Thanks for coming over and for your nice compliment. I appreciate that! Dude, there are a zillion songs out there with drinks in the title. I only touched the surface. So many whiskey songs! More whiskey songs than beer songs which surprised me. This was a fun theme because I was discovering a bunch of new-to-me songs and artists. Normally my playlists contain only songs that I know and really like; these lists in this beverage playlist had songs that I never heard before….BUT they are songs that I like because I listened to them before adding them to the mix. Naturally a bunch didn’t make the cut. And I just plum ran out of time to find any more.
As for how long it took me to put it together: well, let me start by saying I haven’t yet been to bed and it’s almost 2:30 on Monday afternoon. I actually had 85-90% of my song choices already picked out and in a Draft playlist and I was really just going to do what I call and “Push and Play” playlist: have all of the songs in one large playlist and just list the titles and artists in random order.
BUT then last night I got this harebrained idea to do the post with a bar theme and to offer a menu of song selections based on the specific beverage. So then I had to split up and organize all the songs in separate playlists and then I had to write my intro…and THEN I decided to go find images to include with each of the menu items. So yeah, I’m actually just now finishing up with the tweaking and trying to make it look “pretty”. Sometimes being a “perfectionist” is exhausting! I’m used to it though. Been like this all my life. It’s why I’m half-crazy most of the time… 🙂
I’ll be over to your place later today or tomorrow. I really need to get some sleep …and go grab some breakfast… 🙂

I would also like to add one of my new beverage favorites “Lemonade” by Romanian singing star Alexandra Stan:
99% of the songs you presented here are brand new to me. Of the new ones, a few jumped out as especially enjoyable, They include Vince Neil’s “Tats and Tequila,” Krystal Keith doing “Whiskey & Lace,” Turnpike Troubadours with “Gin, Smoke, Lies” and the one by Ne-Yo “Champagne Life.” I never even knew that Kiefer Sutherland is a recording artist. I enjoyed “Not Enough Whiskey,” the first single from Kiefer’s debut 2016 country album Down in a Hole. Of course, there are several familiar songs that are favorites of mine including “Have A Drink On Me” by AC/DC and “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers,” although I prefer the fierce cover by Butcher Babies:

haha, I LOVE your humorous play on words in your comment Tom! It started with the first sentence and you peppered these clever witticisms throughout and including the final paragraph. That Hawaiian Punch ad song sure brought back the memories!
And I absolutely cannot believe that I forgot the Champs “Tequila” song!!! How on earth did I miss that??? That is a perfect song for the Tequila menu and I’m actually going back in and add it to the menu playlist. I mean, I have to! It would almost be sacrilegious! You’ll get full credit though, I promise…

I was just telling John that usually my playlists are made up of songs that are meaningful in some way to me, either I really like them or they’ve been a lifelong favorite but in putting this Beverage themed playlist together I sure did find a lot of new-to-me songs. And that was fun. I do like each of the songs that I included though. Several that I considered didn’t make the cut because they didn’t interest me and others missed the boat because I ran out of time.
I’m glad that I was able to present to you some new stuff and that you found some songs that you liked. Of the ones you mentioned as being old favorites, I feel the same way. With one exception. And this is probably no surprise to you: I couldn’t deal with Butcher Babies version of “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”. Too much growly screaming vocals. ZZ Top’s version is probably my #1 favorite in all these songs. My Top Three would be ZZ Top’s song, Heart’s “White Lightning and Wine” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Whiskey Rock-a-Roller.”

Dang Tom! I’m so glad you couldn’t sleep and thought of these associated gems! Some great wine songs here. I LOVE the Nancy Sinatra & Le Hazlewood’s “Summer Wine” — I also love Nancy’s yellow and black outfit and her very cool yellow guitar!
I remember Andy Williams’ “Days of Wine and Roses”. Never heard of the Fireballs. That’s a cool band name. Those bands back in those days had such great names.
I also really like Dean Martin’s “Little Ol’ Wine Drinker Me”. That’s a good song all the way around, the music and the vocals. I like the deep voiced end too.
The one that really piqued my curiosity was Sticks McGhee’s “Drinkin’ Wine Spo Dee O Dee”. So I did a quick search on him and I’m sold! I was totally going to blow off this coming Monday’s 4M music post but, thanks to you for introducing me to this new-to-me artist, I’m going to do an Artist Spotlight on Sticks McGhee for my post on Monday! So thanks for that! He’s quite the character.

I didn't serve Buffalo Wings at my bar. We didn't have a kitchen so no cooking. We did have a popcorn machine though. 🙂 And peanuts and for those late night munchies, we had microwave personal pizzas and taquitos! Stop laughing. When people are drunk, they'll eat just about anything… 🙂
We did have some awesome parties though. We did a few pig roasts — those were crazy, a few of us sitting outside behind the bar roasting a pig all night long (sounds horrible now but back then…); and customers would bring their favorite dishes. We'd have potlucks and typical neighborhood bar type shindigs…
Football game watch parties, pool tournaments, etc.
It was a lot of fun — for a while anyway… And then it became a pain in the ass and that's when I sold it.
(Open and own a neighborhood bar: Dream fulfilled. Check. Next… 🙂 )

I didn’t post a Results post because a) I was holding out hoping for more votes to come in and b) I wanted it to be a surprise. But I’ll tell you now: Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog will be taking on Mary’s playoff winner Harry Chapin. It was a close race, and like you said, it was a tie until the very end, but Black Dog got two more votes than did Marvin Gaye’s “I’ll Be Doggone”. Honestly I was hoping it would be Marvin and Harry in the final championship. I voted for Marvin and I know you did too, so thank you. But it should still be a very interesting Championship. Two totally different songs but I think all of us in our generation are fans of both songs…for the most part anyway.
Thanks for turning me on to Bruce Blackman’s “Doing Nothing”. It’s new to me and I really like it! Great music. I think I hear a violin in there, yeah? Very pleasant melody. And fun lyrics: I need “another Jose day” and “I’ll be doin’ nothing”….
I need some of those days too! It’s been so long since I’ve had a “doin’ nothing” day…. I’m in serious need of a vacation….

I love Tequila Sunrise. The song and the drink. I even remember the first time I had a tequila sunrise and the party I was at when it happened… 🙂
And I love the Eagles. I was so impressed earlier this week (or maybe it was last week) when the Eagles moved into the Top Spot, beating out Michael Jackson with the best selling album. “The Eagles Greatest Hits (1971-1975)” just beat Jackson’s “Thriller” for Best Selling Album in History. Per the announcement on Monday: “the Recording Industry Association of America told the Associated Press that the Eagles’ 1976 compilation Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) has been certified 38x platinum, surpassing the King of Pop’s monumental 1983 blockbuster Thriller, which has been certified 33x platinum. (An album is certified platinum each time its sales and streams reach one million.)”

I’d add Cole Porter’s “I get no kick from Champagne.” I almost think ABBA had some song involving a drink but I can’t think of it…too tired. I wonder if there’s is any song involving vodka or did I just pass right by this somehow, in which case, I blame all the alcohol I consumed

As soon as it started playing, I said “Oh, this is definitely from a musical!” No surprise that you’d b the one introducing it to me. Your favorite movie genre is musicals, right? I think I remember you saying that at some point on your blog during a Thursday’s Movie Pick post.
Re: Abba, I don’t know either. And I’m too tired to go digging as it’s 4:45am and I have to get up in 2 hours… But I did a quick search to see if Abba had any songs with alcohol in the title but it just came back with articles on Benny Andersson’s alcohol addiction. I know I overdo it and I’m really not trying to be an overachiever… I just like certain themes and then I go crazy with them. Lol. A 49ers fan, eh? Okay. Well we’ll have to see if they’re going to play each other in the upcoming season and make a bet! I did a quick search and discovered that Buffalo and San Francisco have played each other 12 times, with each team winning 6. So it’s a pretty even match at this stage of the game. Dang, one day you are going to publish all your posts in a huge Encyclopedia of Music but until then, I chose from here and there and, again, am amazed at what you came up with. My husband (who is a huge Led Zeppelin fan) applauds you for Tea for One, from their 3rd album, very bluesy song. But my favorite will remain “Tequila” by the Champs. Most of these songs are new to me (especially the country ones), but I see some familiar favorites that it was good to jam to again. And rum may be my drink of choice, but my favorite songs go with Tequila.
And What? It’s closing time, and you didn’t close out with Semitonic’s “Closing Time”? (I know it ‘s not a song with a beverage in the title, but it is a drinking song and keeping with the theme of your bar.
