BATTLE OF THE BANDS: It’s a DOG vs CAT Battle Showdown! This is ROUND TWO…

Today’s Battle of the Bands is ROUND TWO of the

Ultimate Dog v Cat Tournament!

In case you’re out of the loop and aren’t sure what’s going on here, Mary from Jingle Jangle Jungle and I have teamed up to do the Ultimate Dog vs Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament. You can go back to my original Round One DOG Battle post for full details, or Mary’s Round One CAT Battle.

To catch you up: Round One was a battle of Hard-Rock Dogs and Cats. My Hard-Rock Dog Song battle (here if you missed it) featured these two contenders: Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” going up against Ted Nugent’s “Dog Eat Dog”. Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” was the victor in Round One.

Today here at Angels Bark I’m doing ROUND TWO – The Soft-Rock DOG Battle. Mary is doing Round Two – the Soft-Rock CAT Battle over at her place.

My Contenders duking it out for the Soft-Rock Dog title are Lobo’s “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” vs Marvin Gaye’s “I’ll Be Doggone”

Are you ready for this dog-fight? Here we go…

Contender #1: ME and YOU and A DOG NAMED BOO by Lobo

“Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” is the 1971 debut single by Lobo. Written by Lobo under his real name Kent LaVoie, it appears on the Introducing Lobo album. Lobo means “Wolf” in Spanish.

Roland Kent LaVoie (born July 31, 1943), better known by his stage name Lobo, is an American singer-songwriter who was successful in the early 1970s, scoring several U.S. Top 10 hits including “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo”, “I’d Love You to Want Me”, and “Don’t Expect Me to Be Your Friend”. These three songs, along with “Where Were You When I Was Falling In Love”, gave Lobo four chart toppers on the Easy Listening/Hot Adult Contemporary chart.

“Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” is about two hippies and a dog taking a cross-country road trip in an old car that runs poorly. The protagonists of the song get mired in the Georgia clay, steal food from a farmer and work to pay it off, and end up living in Los Angeles, but the old car makes them want to hit the road again.

The single peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the first of four of his songs to hit #1 on the Easy Listening chart, where it had a two-week stay at that top spot in May 1971. The song also reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1971, and spent four weeks at #1 in New Zealand.

Internationally, “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” was Lobo’s second most successful song among more than 15 single releases. It was surpassed only by “I’d Love You to Want Me” the following year.

Contender #2: I’LL BE DOGGONE by Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye (April 2, 1939 — April 1, 1984), born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr., was an American singer-songwriter and musician who helped to shape the sound of Motown Records in the 1960s with a string of hits.

“I’ll Be Doggone” is a 1965 song recorded by American soul singer Marvin Gaye and released on the Tamla label. Gaye is known for his smoldering love songs, but this one takes a different approach, as it finds him warning his girl that if he ever finds out she is cheating, he will leave her. The song talks about how a man tells his woman that he’ll be “doggone” about simple things but if she did him wrong that he’d be “long gone”.

“I’ll Be Doggone” represents three firsts for Marvin Gaye: It was his first million-selling record, his first chart-topping #1 R&B single and his first song to be co-written by Smokey Robinson and his fellow Miracles bandmates, Pete Moore and Marv Tarplin. The clever wordplay – “I wouldn’t be doggone, I’d be long gone” – is typical of Smokey Robinson’s songwriting.

Along with the Motown’s long-standing female back-up group The Andantes, the Miracles provided backing vocals to the song. (Fun fact: Smokey Robinson also penned Gaye’s second R&B hit, “Ain’t That Peculiar”).

“I’ll Be Doggone” also gave Marvin his third crossover top-ten Pop hit, where it peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 (which matched his follow-up record “Ain’t That Peculiar”, also charting at #8).

On the Motown roster, Marvin Gaye was far more than a singer – he was also a songwriter and drummer. Early on, Gaye wrote his own songs, including “Pride and Joy” and “Stubborn Kind Of Fellow,” and had an interest in recording standards (he wanted to become “the black Frank Sinatra”).

Mickey Stevenson, who was head of A&R at Motown, convinced Gaye to go in another direction as a singer, recording more R&B material. Robinson wrote this song specifically for Gaye, but Marvin put his own spin on it. Said Smokey, “When I showed him the song, he began to sing it like I had never imagined it being sung.”

  1. Hi, Michele!

I’ll be doggone if you and I didn’t post the same song and video today, dear friend! 🙂 I swear I didn’t “copy off your paper.” I had today’s SPMM post finished and scheduled months ago, long before you announced your Dog and Cat Showdown. Let’s chalk it up to “great minds.” It pleases me to know that your ears match mine on a blogworthy song. Therefore it should come as no surprise that I am voting for Marvin Gaye in today’s battle. Soul music is one of my lifelong favorite music categories. I appreciate the clever word play on “I’ll Be Doggone” and the arrangement is top notch. Simply put, “I’ll Be Doggone” is a great Motown single. More often than not, I prefer an artist’s early career output, and that holds true for Marvin Gaye. I am aware that Marvin eventually railed against Motown for giving him nothing but love songs and dance ditties to record. He thought they were beneath him. As we all know Marvin eventually set out on his own to record more serious, socially conscious material. However my favorite Marvin Gaye recordings remain the ones he waxed throughout the 60s including his duets with female artists. As I glance through my Record Research book I notice that many of Marvin Gaye’s Tamla singles peaked surprisingly low on the pop chart, even though they have stood the test of time among Motown’s best.

Soft rock recordings by singer-songwriters like Lobo were very popular in the early 70s, and the single “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” was big on the radio in my region. The song is well written and includes a dog character which earns it bonus points. In addition I like the catchy melody. All in all the recording is pleasing to the ear, but the fact remains that soft rock is not one of my favorite genres. Therefore, I had no difficulty making up my mind to vote for soul man Marvin Gaye in your band battle.

Thank you very much, dear friend Michele, and enjoy the rest of your week!

    • Hi Tom! Your the first vote in and it goes to that sexy soul man Marvin. I can only imagine the many more hits he would’ve gifted to us had his father not shot him dead. Such a sad and shocking tragedy. His career surely would’ve spanned many decades.
That was funny that we picked the same song and video and featured it on the same day! Great minds…
Thanks for your vote and your continued support. I’ll be tallying the votes and posting the results today so stand by. I have no idea how this is going to turn out since I’m just now starting to compile the votes…
Thanks for partaking in mine and Mary’s Dog v Cat BOTB Tournament. This is fun! Hope you’re enjoying it too…

  2. I can’t recall ever having heard the Marvin Gaye number. It’s okay, but I much prefer his music that came later. What’s Going On is one of my favorite albums of all time.

In this Battle I’m far more partial to the Lobo song. I like the sound and it brings back a ton of memories. They used to play that song on the radio a lot.

My vote goes to Lobo with “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo”.

    • Hey Lee,
Thanks for coming by and partaking in our Dog v Cat Battle Tournament! I’m here tallying the votes for today’s results post and you’re in with the first vote for Lobo. I have always loved this song and it has resided in my head as an earworm plenty of times over the many years that it’s been played on the radio.
Results forthcoming momentarily. Thanks for your vote!

  3. That’s a fun battle concept! I’m a cat person so I’ll be sure to check out Mary’s post too.

Both these artists, and songs, are excellent. Ah, I remember the days. I’m giving my vote to Lobo today because I really needed that laid back nostalgia.

    • Ah, that “laid back nostalgia” — isn’t it great?! I’m all in for nostalgia. I guess my best years are behind me because I just love all the good memories that all those great classics bring back for me.
Thanks for coming by and voting. Gotcha down for Lobo. Hope you had a chance to check out Mary’s battle. And be sure to come back on 8/15 as we’ll be hosting Round Three on our blogs… Will be interesting to see who comes out on top, Dog or Cat…
(they’re both winners in my book. I love both dogs and cats)

  4. Hey there challenge/battle Partner!

I swear I need an extra day this week. I’ve been so crazy busy lately and not getting a whole lot of sleep. Been so busy, I almost forgot it was battle day! Good thing I have my post prewritten and ready to go! Hopefully things will ease up a bit over here soon.

As much as I enjoy Marvin Gaye, I think I’m going to have to vote for Lobos. Ever since we talked about the battle, the tune has been in the recesses of my brain and I just can’t seem to get it out. And, if I’m counting correctly, I do believe this puts your battle at a current tie situation.

This has been such a fun idea! We will have to collaborate on these things more often!

May the best Dog or Cat Win!

    • Hey Girl,
I so get it! I sat down yesterday, replying to Comments and tallying votes to name the winner and get it posted. But in the middle of doing it, the doorbell rang, the groceries got delivered, then a customer came by for a visit, then my Mom arrived, then it was time to feed the dogs, then, then, then…. It’s crazy! I need more hours in a day and more days in a week!

I love this battle tournament too. We came up with a brilliant idea. 🙂 hehe

I totally get how Lobo’s song has stuck in your head! I mentioned to someone else that “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” has been an earworm of mine over several years/decades! It’s interesting how a song can have that effect on so many people.
Another vote for Lobo! I can’t wait to see how this turns out. It’s neck and neck…

    • Hey Stephen! Wooly Bully is a fun name for a dog. What breed of dog was he?? And this was a fun clip from the Moonlighting gang. I used to watch the show but I don’t remember this. What is it from? Was it in an episode or a promo or what? Hilarious. Especially when the song was sped up. It had me smiling and then giggling. Thanks! I needed that actually…
Another vote for Marvin Gaye. Tallying votes now (was doing that yesterday too but the day took on a life of its own and I didn’t get back to it until now but I’m keeping my ass in this chair, no matter what, until I get these votes totalled and post the results). It’s going to be a close one…

      • MICHELE ~
Wooly Bully was a German Shepherd. If I ever had another dog, I’d name him Mr. Peabody.

The Moonlighting clip came from a great Season 4 episode titled ‘And The Flesh Was Made Word’. Occasionally they would run a little short on the episodes so they’d fill the time with something off the wall — like Bert Viola singing ‘Wooly Bully’.

Moonlighting is one of my very favorite TV shows of all time. Definitely in my Top Five. It was so creative and innovative! Had one of the best theme songs, too.

There were a ton of really terrific episodes, but my favorite was unquestionably ‘Atomic Shakespeare’, their spoof of ‘Taming Of The Shrew’. I honestly think they elevated TV to a whole new level with that one. It took forever and cost a trainload of $$$.$$ to make that one episode, but it was like a mini-movie.

  5. I always thought “Me And You And A Dog Named Boo” was insipid and more of a song for kindergarteners and would give the ol’ radio dial a spin when it came on. You might say it was an EBS Special. Marvin, on the other hand, was superb, sublime, even, and when juxtaposed with Lobo, it becomes even better. Marvin Gaye wins this for me.

    • Holy moly John! Insipid?? Wow, you really dislike this song! One person’s pleasant earworm song is another person’s EBS Special! haha
I remember those Emergency Broadcast System ominous alerts from way back when… I would never imagine “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” put in the same category. Speaking of those irritating “This is only a Test. Had it been a real emergency, blah blah blah” — they ALWAYS, almost inevitably, come on while I’m watching a show from my TiVo so the emergency alert kicks my show off the screen and I have to wait until the alert finishes, then go back in and restart my show. Now, every time that happens from here on out, I’m sure I’ll automatically bring to mind Lobo’s song, thanks to you. 🙂

Another vote for Marvin Gaye. Results coming soon. Within the hour. Stand by…
Thanks for coming by and voting.

  6. Hi Michele; This is such a fun concept for a BOTB series! 😀 I’m not a big fan of pop/soft rock music but I remember hearing both songs on the radio a lot. Going with Marvin Gaye on this one, for the “toe-tapping” factor. Have a great week!

    • Hey Debbie. Toe-tapping factor. I like it!
Another vote for Marvin. I’m just tallying the vote now and I think Marvin is now in the lead. Results coming soon…Like within the hour.
      Thanks for your vote!

  7. So I know both songs especially the song by Lobo and always wished I could have just gone on a road trip withmy dog. That being said, I give my vote to Marvin Gaye because I love the Motown feel whereas Lobo is good but not as good as Marvin…in my humble opinion.

    • Hey Birgit. Well this battle was neck and neck until the last few votes coming in as all have been for Marvin. I think he’s going to come out the winner on this one. But stand by. I’m still tallying. Results post going up shortly.
      Thanks for your vote!
