It’s Results Day for my most recent battle featuring the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes song “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Pitting reggae band Zap Pow against Simply Red probably wasn’t the brightest move because we damn near had a shut out. It seems that the Simply Red version simply brings back a rush of memories for people and the group garnered most of the votes. Zap Pow did manage to pull out two votes though.
I was originally going to use Martina McBride’s version against Simply Red and in hindsight that probably would’ve been a better battle because her version is very strong as well. It’s more closely matched to Simply Red’s version. But I wanted to bring something different to the table and Zap Pow definitely provided that. I think they did a fabulous job with the song. I liked it because it wasn’t overly reggae, giving us just a nice hint of the genre.
That being said, my vote is going to Simply Red as well. Their version is just so strong and powerful. I love the vocals.
So, Simply Red wins this battle hands down! Final tally:
Simply Red: 15 votes
Zap Pow: 2 votes
Here’s another Simply Red song that is a favorite of mine. And I suspect many other folks here like this song as well.
As always, thanks for playing along! See you on the 15th for another oldie but goodie…
Hi, Michele!
Go figure – I live in a purple state that’s turning blue but I voted Simply Red! 🙂 As I see it, there’s no shame in a lopsided contest because you introduced a little known, seldom heard version of a popular song, one that most of us would never have come across. I welcomed the chance to hear that reggae rendition. It was good but Red was better.
Thank you very much, dear friend Michele. I look forward to your musical offerings on the 15th!

The video with “Holding Back The Years” really enhances the song, which is lovely, by the way, and I’m in that group of Simply Red fans…

Well, at least two of us saved you from a shutout. 🙂 The generation gap was definitely evident for this one, as I only remembered the original version. The reggae slant was more interesting, IMO.

Yes, thank you so much for saving me from a shutout!! Us old folks remember Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. I was surprised that people weren’t aware of their version too…
Glad you liked Zap Pow! I do think they did a really good job with the song…

It was indeed. I really thought more people would vote for Zap Pow. It was something different and a lot of people like cover versions that are different from the original…
Thanks so much for voting for Zap Pow: you and Debbie saved me from a shutout! 🙂

A slam dunk for Simply Red and it’s understandable. I’m often tempted to use a reggae song version but usually avoid it. Eventually I’m sure I will.
“Holding Back the Years” is such a great song.

Reggae is for sure a very niche genre, and seems to be popular with only a few.
I agree: Holding Back the Years: awesome song!
Thanks for coming by. You back in Cali now??

Yay! I love Simply Red. We need to call him up and tell him to do a revival tour. How can we make that happen? LOL. I miss this kind of music. I think I’ll go listen to Ed Sheeran…Thanks!

We’ve all experienced that feeling of regret, where our potential Battle does battle in our minds: Should I use this against that, or that against this, or this against the other?
And then if the Battle isn’t competitive we think: Dang it! I KNEW I should have used something against something else!
But the good news is that just two weeks later we get another chance to get it right again.

Amen to that! We’ll see with the next battle. I’m not all that crazy about it and it’s all i have in the queue because I’ve been overwhelmed with so many things here at home. But I’ll get back into a groove, I’m sure.
Thanks for coming by Stephen…

Well, MICHELE, if now (or ever) you need a Battle just let me know. I have so many on my ‘Songs To BOTB’ list that I’ll never get to them all, and I’d be glad to offer some suggestions from off my list.
In fact, just yesterday a new one by two “Classic Rock” stars occurred to me that seems very intriguing with potential but I’d be glad to give it away to someone as I might never get to it myself.
You can always just leave me your Email address in a comment, I’ll write it down and delete the comment so your address isn’t really published. Then we can discuss offline.
It’s an open offer for now or any time in the future.

Hey Stephen. Thanks for the awesome offer. I’d love to take you up on it. If you really don’t want to use the classic rock artists one, I’d be happy to take it off your hands. 🙂 I really appreciate it. Here’s my email address: michele@angelsbark.com
Thanks for being so sweet! XOXO
