Battle of the Bands: These Boots Were Made for Walkin’

It’s time for another Battle of the Bands. Today I’m featuring Nancy Sinatra’s song “These Boots Were Made for Walkin’”. Give a listen to the two different cover versions and vote for your favorite. I’ll post the results in 6 days!

“These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” is a pop song written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by Nancy Sinatra. It was released on February 22, 1966, and hit No. 1 in the United States Billboard Hot 100 and in the UK Singles Chart.

The second single taken from her debut album Boots, and follow-up to the minor hit “So Long, Babe,” the song became an instant success. In late February 1966, the song topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart moved to replicate that position in similar charts across the world.

When the single was first released, some thought it had to do with the subway strike in New York. In 2006, Pitchfork Media selected it as the 114th best song of the 1960s. Critic Tom Breihan described the song as “maybe the finest bitchy kiss-off in pop history.”

The song was used in a number of ways related to the Vietnam War:

  • During television news coverage in 1966/67, the song was aired as a soundtrack as the cameras focused on US Infantrymen on patrol during the Vietnam War.
  • In 1966 and 1967 Sinatra traveled to Vietnam to perform for the troops. Many US soldiers adopted the song as their anthem, as shown in Pierre Schoendoerffer’s Academy Award winning documentary The Anderson Platoon (1967).
  • The song’s popularity with US Infantrymen in Vietnam was reprised in a scene in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (1987).
  • Sinatra played herself, re-enacting her 1960s performance of the song in Vietnam, in episode 6 (June 1988) of the television show China Beach.
  • In 2005, Paul Revere & the Raiders recorded a revamped version of the song using Sinatra’s original vocal track. It appeared on the CD Ride to the Wall, Vol. 2, with proceeds going to help Vietnam veterans.

Here’s Nancy Sinatra performing the song. Great music video from the 60s!

Now for the battle: Give a listen to these two contenders and tell me which one you like best. Remember, I’ll post the results in 6 days.

CONTENDER #1: Geri Halliwell:

Geraldine Estelle “Geri” Horner (Halliwell; born 6 August 1972) is an English pop singer-songwriter, clothes designer, author and actress. Halliwell came to international prominence in the 1990s as Ginger Spice, a member of the successful girl group the Spice Girls; together they sold over 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. In 1998 Halliwell left the Spice Girls, however she rejoined the group when they reunited in 2007. Halliwell has reportedly amassed a $30 million fortune during her last two years in the group.

Geri Halliwell recorded her own version of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” for the soundtrack to the film Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. The song was released on February 1, 2000 to promote the film. It was also included as a B-Side in her single Bag It Up, ranking number one in the UK charts.

CONTENDER #2: Nicki Gillis:

Nicki Gillis is a female vocalist and entertainer from Australia who was born in Western Australia and grew up a child of entertainer parents from Croatian and Italian backgrounds.

Gillis covered the song on her 2011 album Woman of Substance. The song has featured in Nicki’s live shows across the globe since she was 19 years old. Current performances retain the faithfulness of Nancy’s original vocals but with a contemporary heavier rock sound played by Nicki’s band. The version on her Woman of Substance album is a touch softer and more like the original Nancy Sinatra version from 1966.

  1. I loved Nancy and her music. I had a few of her albums. Both of these versions are good, but I think Geri Halliwell is more to my preference. Nicki’s version has a very cool rough edge with some neat guitar work. The Halliwell version has really good production with a nice solid beat. Though call, but I call my vote for Geri Halliwell.

    • I never owned any Nancy Sinatra albums but this song is one of my favorites by her.
Thanks for your vote. The first one cast and it’s for Geri…

  2. A fun song, though one that hits close to home. 😉
I’ve been walked on before, so I know how it feels. That’s what I got for trying to be the nice guy. Oh well, those days are over.
I don’t usually listen to the “reference” song but for some reason I decided to watch the entire video from Sinatra. So, thanks for including it. Odd that I decided to watch it fully, this time around.
I certainly didn’t mind the cover from the two others. But for me? I’m a spice kind of guy and I DO love Ginger. So you know I’m going to be voting for Geri.

    • Don’t stop being a nice guy Jeffrey! Real women like nice men. Believe me, we’ve been through the Bad-Boy phase and now are in the market for someone NICE, and I mean nice in all facets of the word… 🙂
I’m glad you watched Nancy Sinatra’s video. I thought it was a real classic. Was neat seeing the production values from back then…
Another vote for our spice girl. Thanks for coming by!

  3. I had to go to you tube to listen to Nicki Gillis and it was a live version. Her voice is strung and sexy but I like Geri Halliwell’s version better. It is more fun and in keeping with the original which I like. I actually always liked this remake

    • Birgit, so sorry you had to go searching for another version. I didn’t know that the video I posted wasn’t viewable in Canada. Glad you found something. Debbie D posted the live version video in the comment section here, which is fine but I really like the Nicki Gillis studio version that I chose.
Thanks for the effort that you put into voting. Much appreciated! Gotcha down for Geri Halliwell…

  4. I loved this song!! I knew every word of it and could belt it out at any time. And I think I still love it best with Nancy!! She was the best!! But if I can’t chose Nancy then I will go for Geri because she sounds closest to me! Although I do like the other one too. My vote goes to Geri!

  5. Hi, Michele!

Thanks for waiting patiently until I got back home from my travels today.

A version of “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” was recorded by Anita Lane and cleverly used in the soundtrack and closing credits sequence of one of the coolest movies I ever saw – Delusion (1991). I never heard these two versions before and I was not familiar with Australian singer Nicki Gillis. My ears tell me that Nicki’s voice is a bit too husky. I much prefer the quality of Geri’s voice and she renders the song the way it was meant to be sung – sweet, spicy and sassy. The arrangement on Geri’s recording is a lot like the original and in this case that’s a good thing. I love the punchy horns. In short, Geri’s cover has loads of pizzazz and I didn’t find the Gillis recording nearly as much fun. I notice this cover by Geri is available on her 2016 CD Playlist which includes a cover of the disco hit “It’s Raining Men.” I think I’ll buy it. Geri Halliwell made a believer out of me with this one and she gets my vote!

Thank you very much, dear friend Michele!

    • Wow, glad to know you liked the Halliwell cover so much that you’re going to buy it! That’s cool!
I’m not familiar with the movie Delusion. I looked it up on IMDB and see that it stars one of my favorite actors: Jerry Orbach. Love him! The plot summary makes it sound interesting. I’ll have to check and see if Netflix carries it… Thanks for turning me on to it.

Enjoy your holiday weekend Shady! Thanks for your vote and your comments.

  6. I’ve always liked the original and didn’t know it had such a storied history with the Vietnam war. The second video wasn’t available and all I could find is a live version. Both renditions were good, but I think Nicki gives it more “oomph”. Of course, that opinion is based on her live performance, so maybe it shouldn’t count? Your call! 🙂 Here’s the video I found:

    • That sucks that the version I posted isn’t viewable in Canada! Sorry about that. Thanks so much for posting this live version. It’s good but not as good as the studio version that I chose. Oh well. But hey, it was good enough to garner a vote from you so that says something! And of course that counts! So I have you down for Nicki Gillis… the first vote cast for her!
      Thanks Debbie… 🙂

  7. Hi, MICHELE ~
This was an easy vote for me to cast.

I’ve always liked the song. So, if this was a 3-way, I’d probably vote for Nancy. But between the two covers, I go with NICKI for sure. The other cover was damn-near an identical reproduction of Nancy’s original. So, why’d she bother?

NICKI gave it that tougher Rock bottom and edginess, and she has a far stronger voice than Ginger Spice has. NICKI walked all over Geri in this contest!

And Happy 4th to you too!! 🙂

  8. Hi Michele. This in’t a favorite song and I’m not a Nancy fan. That said, I did find Nikki Gillis version more pleasing. Such a deep rich voice! My vote goes to her!

    happy 4th 🙂

  9. I had a harder time choosing this one than some folks (love the original, by the way…my Dad played that A LOT). In the end, I have to give it to Nicki, though. Love both voices but hers was slightly better. Thanks!

  10. Do you rermember the episode of “Two and a Half Men” when Holland Taylor sings this? Just wondering. Whenever she was on, she was the funniest thing about the show.

I have always liked that video of Nancy Sinatra singing this one. She was gorgeous, and I love the Sixties vibe, especially that hair…

Both Geri and Nicki did a great job of this one, but I found myself liking Nicki’s voice that much better, so she gets the vote this week.

    • No I never saw that Two & a Half Men episode. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
Wasn’t the Nancy Sinatra video fabulous?? I love it! Glad you liked it too.
Thanks for your vote for Nicki…

  11. I’m late, I’m late! So glad you kept the voting open an extra day, Michele… Would’ve hated to miss this one. My vote goes to Nicki; really the coolest version of this song I’ve ever heard. Yep, the video didn’t work for me, so I found the same one Debbie posted (should’ve checked the comments before traipsing off to YouTube), and even with the deficit of the recording’s sound quality it’s still got so much more character and… someone else used “oomph”—yes. I agree 🙂

Great battle, Michele! And thanks for not giving up on me 🙂

    • Yay, you made it Guilie! So glad. Sorry the Nicki video didn’t work in your country either. Bummer because it was actually better than the live version that you and Debbie and Birgit listened to. Thanks for taking the extra step to listen.
I think yous is the final vote coming in under the wire and it’s for Nicki Gillis. Thanks for your vote! I’ll tally the votes in the morning…
      Have a great night!
