Notable Quotable: Insecurity

“If you hear a voice within you say “you cannot paint,” then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.” –Vincent Van Gogh

Ah, that was a push in the direction I needed. I’ve been saying for so long that I’m stalled in my writing, but guess what? I’m not writing! Maybe that’s why I’m so stalled. Gee, ya think?

I suffer a very common insecurity that writers often experience: I sit around and say “I can’t write.” Followed by those self-defeating thoughts like “Who am I kidding? Who’s going to want to read what I have to say?” and “I’m not good enough” and “I can’t compare to and will never be as good as (insert author name here).” It’s a vicious cycle and one that I need to get out of already.

So if we follow the logic here in this quote, whatever we say we can’t do, just start doing it and we’ll be proven wrong. I like it. I think I’ll take a page from Van Gogh’s book and just start writing dammit and silence that voice inside me once and for all!

What about you? What is it that you continue to say you are incapable of doing? What would happen if you just started doing it? Does this quote spark something in you?

    • Good luck with that Tasha. I’m a horrible procrastinator. Queen of Procrastination here!
      “Just keep going…”: Good advice!

Thanks for stopping by today. Loved your egg slicer post!

  1. Hi, dear One-L!

This is a very good topic. I think it is important to remember that there are many different styles of writing just as there are many different styles of painting and forms of art. I can imagine Archie Bunker taking one look at Starry Night and declaring that Vincent Van Gogh is a terrible artist and cannot paint because “that doesn’t even look like a real sky.” I am also reminded of the story about the radio sound engineer who was trained to “ride the pot” and keep sound levels as uniform as possible during live broadcasts. During an orchestral performance of a classical piece filled with quiet passages, the engineer repeatedly cranked up the gain so that the quiet parts could be heard more easily by the listening audience. In doing so he defeated the purpose and ruined the intended effect of the classical composition.

Write (paint, blog) to please yourself and I guarantee that somebody, many bodies, will appreciate what you have wrought.

    Happy Wednesday, dear friend Michele!

    • Yeah, ol’ Archie, he was no art connoisseur!
Interesting story of the sound engineer.

Good words of advice here Shady. Thanks!
Hope you had a great Wednesday. To give you an update: I took my mom to have her Cardioversion today and the doctor ended up not doing it because it was discovered that one of her pacemaker leads isn’t working. This could be a big part of the problem as to why her heart is beating so erratically. She is going to have surgery next week to replace that lead. It was kind of a relief, as this might be a logical answer. Thanks for your continued good thoughts for her!

        • Thanks Tom! Have a great day. My trees are very happy today: we’re getting fabulous rainstorms today… We take all the rain we can get here in Texas…

  2. Trust me when I say you definitely CAN write, Michele. 🙂 Your entry for the Lost & Found blogfest on Feb. 1 was GOOD! Shady has some excellent advice. To paraphrase a line from the movie Field of Dreams: “If your write it, they will come.” 🙂

    • Oh thank you Debbie! I appreciate you bringing that piece up. I need to go back and re-read some of my better pieces and get some inspiration from them.

I like that: “If you write it, they will come.”! Thanks!! 🙂

And I hear ya about the procrastination: I can always find a million other things to do that sit my ass down and start writing…which makes me wonder: if I have such a hard time getting motivated to write, am I a writer even?? I am, dammit, I am! Just a slow one! 🙂

  3. I can relate to your insecurities about your writing. Sometimes it’s hard to get started with what I want to write, struggling against the naysayers in my head. But I manage to work through it and forge ahead.

  4. I do–or at least try to do–that which interests me to the extent that I think I might like to do it. When I find I don’t have much hope of achieving any great skill at a particular pursuit, then I let it go. I might maintain an interest in whatever it is, but I accept my own limitations.

I write despite what anyone else thinks about my writing and it’s the same with blogging (if we want to delineate any difference between the two). I feel like I do a fine job at it and as long as I feel comfortable with what I’m producing then I’m content to continue pursuing my writing endeavors.

On the other hand, years ago when I was in my mid-20’s, I decided to take tap dance lessons because I had a brilliant idea for a juggling routine incorporating dance–after all my mother had done something similar and was quite good at what she did. Alas, I was not gifted with her talent for dancing, never was and still am not, so I let the dancing idea go. Though I will admit to trying a few dance steps in front of a mirror at times when I’m by myself, but, nope, still no dance talent.

I think if one wants to do something badly enough, then they should do it or at least try to do it. Even if they don’t do it well, so long as they are having a good time I’d say to keep on doing what you like. I’d rather live my life enjoying it rather than always trying to please others or let others dictate what I should or should not be doing.

  5. I feel that way sometimes about my scrapbooking. There are so many great designers out there. But then I think that even if I use a basic principle that someone else has started with, my final result will be very different from theirs. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, if that helps 🙂 Keep writing.

  6. When I find myself stuck in my writing, I sit down and write about what I’m stuck on. Funnily enough, it only takes me a sentence or two of whining before I find myself slipping back into whatever story I’m working on.

    • That’s a good idea. Kinda like journaling. ‘m good at whining and I can pitch a good bitch for sure! 🙂 That’s sure to get me started…

  7. I told my children to follow their passions. I think it has served them well. It’s been difficult for me to overcome things my mother said to me, but I have for the most part. I wish she had lived to see my successes.

  8. I can relate for sure. When I look at other people’s cards and I see the magic they do, I think my cards are not as good but then, I know that is my negative emotions talking. If I stop then I am doing a disservice to myself because I enjoy it. It makes me forget things even when I feel I have hit a roadblock I will still colour or draw or something. We always undervalue our own ability. I believe in you and that you can write so…..even if you start writing the TV guide, start writing because, you enjoy writing.

    • Girl, your cards ARE magic! You are so talented. I think we humans get so bogged down in negative thoughts. And you’re right: they’re nothing but roadblocks.
Thanks for believing in me! XOXO

  9. I think I have done most of what I have said I want to do. But I really have a few rooms I want to paint! Not like painting a picture but still painting. I am going to buy paint this week and start painting!! And Michele, you do write. I have been reading your writing for quite a while now. I like your writing!!

    • Thanks so much Paula! That means so much to me, you have no idea. Thank you. XOXO

And I love painting rooms! Well, not the painting part per se, but the shopping for paint and selecting colors. LOVE that process! I went crazy when I did a remodel a few years ago. I had all white walls and wanted some color. Well, color I got! My living room and hallway are a nice warm tan, my master bedroom is ocean blue, my master bath is gold luster, one spare room is emerald green, the other a maroon and my guest bath is red and black. Lots of color around here!
HAVE A BLAST with your paint shopping!
