STATEMENT THAT APPEARS AT THE BEGINNING OF ALL A-Z 2016 PAGES:

Welcome to the A-Z Classic TV Shows Theme Songs and Intros! Last year I did an A-Z Musical Tour of My Life and featured tons of classic rock music. I had so much fun with it that this year I decided to present classic television shows theme songs and intros. These are shows that I remember from my youth during the 60s and 70s…with the occasional 80s show thrown in. Each show is introduced with information (gathered primarily from my favorite go-to for info, Wikipedia) or associated memories, followed by a video of the TV show’s theme song intro. At first glance, the posts may seem long because of the number of videos included but it’s really laid out in a way that will enable you to scroll through and read, watch or hear just what you want and then either move on to the next A-Zer or linger and go back in time with all the fun theme song intros you’ll find here. Please leave a comment and share your favorite classic TV shows. By all means, bookmark my blog so you can come back! I hope you enjoy my collection. Now, let’s get started with…

Another tough letter! This is the only classic TV show that I could come up with that I actually saw, although not during it’s first run; I saw it in reruns:

 Z is for Zorro:

Zorro is an American action-adventure western drama series produced by Walt Disney Productions. Based on the well-known Zorro character created by Johnston McCulley, the series premiered on October 10, 1957 on ABC. The final network broadcast was July 2, 1959. Seventy-eight episodes were produced, and 4 hour-long specials were aired on the Walt Disney anthology series between October 30, 1960 and April 2, 1961.

For most of its brief run, Zorro’s episodes were part of continuing story arcs, each about thirteen episodes long, which made it almost like a serial. The first of these chronicles the arrival of Zorro / Diego to California in 1820 and his battle of wits with the greedy and cruel local Commandante, Captain Enrique Sánchez Monastario. After Monastario’s final defeat, in the second storyline, Zorro must uncover and counter the machinations of the evil Magistrado Carlos Galindo, who is part of a plot to rule California. The third story arc concerns the leader of that conspiracy, the shadowy figure of “The Eagle”, revealed as vain and insecure José Sebastián Vargas. It’s revealed that the plot to gain control of California is so that he can turn it over to another country, implied to be Germany, for a huge profit. Season one concludes with Varga’s death.

Season two opens with Diego in Monterey, the colonial capital, where privately collected money to bring a supply ship to California is consistently diverted to a gang of bandits. Diego stays to investigate, both as himself and as Zorro, and becomes interested in Ana Maria Verdugo, the daughter of the man organizing the effort. Once Zorro defeats the thieves, he enters into a rivalry with his old friend Ricardo del Amo, a practical joker who is also interested in Ana Maria. Ana Maria in turn is in love with Zorro. While in Monterey, Zorro and Sergeant Demetrio López García also get involved in a dispute between the peons and a repressive Lieutenant Governor. Diego is on the verge of giving up his mask to marry Ana Maria, but Don Alejandro talks him out of it. Zorro (and Diego) says goodbye to Ana Maria and returns to Los Angeles, where he gets involved in a series of shorter adventures. In one three episode story arc, guest starring Annette Funicello, Zorro must solve the mystery of Anita Cabrillo’s father, a man who does not seem to exist. Other storylines late in the series involve Diego’s never-do-well uncle (Cesar Romero), a plot against the governor of California, an encounter with an American “mountain man” (Jeff York, reprising a role from The Saga of Andy Burnett), and outwitting a greedy emissary from Spain.

Well, we’re at the end of the A-Z. What a trip this has been! I’m exhausted and my butt hurts from sitting at the computer for so long. But I hope you’ve had as much fun as I have! Thank you for all the visits and comments. I especially appreciate all of you who have so faithfully come to visit every day. I’ve enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you and look forward to many more exchanges. It’s truly been a pleasure!

And for the final questions, since we’ve been concentrating on classic TV shows from the 60s and 70s, I’d love to know this: what are your favorite CURRENT TV shows? What did you watch last night? What are you going to watch tonight?

Thanks again for taking the A-Z ride with me. Happy Trails!

  1. I was a faithful Zorro viewer when I was a kid. In fact I rarely missed Mickey Mouse Club period.

Mostly now I watch news channels. I’ve been especially transfixed by the political primaries over the past year. I have very few shows I watch regularly. Right now it’s only The Flash and The 100 and those I can’t say that I faithfully watch every episode. I’m not the TV fan that I used to be–well, except for the news.

Congratulations on making it through another A to Z Challenge. You did a great job with it. Guess I’ll see you at the next BOTB–it’s tomorrow!

I too have been fascinated by the primaries. You couldn’t make some of this stuff up! Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out…
      See you tomorrow for BOTB!
Thanks again for a wonderful Challenge!

  2. Congratulations on finishing the A to Z. It’s been a great month!
I fell asleep last night watching Hill Street Blues, because I’ve been watching a lot of classic TV on local channels since I started this whole thing in April.
Now comes the tough part. Thinking of a new theme for next year and start prep work.
    I have a few ideas.
    See you tomorrow for BOTB

    • Thanks Jeffrey! Hill Street Blues: great show. The forerunner to the explosive interest in cop shows…
I haven’t even started thinking about next year yet. I had a few ideas but nothing is percolating really so we’ll see.
Thanks for all your visits and comments here. Much appreciated.
      See you tomorrow!

  3. Hi, Michele!

I watched Zorro first run and never missed an episode.

“Zorro – the fox so cunning and free.
Zorro – who makes the sign of the Z.”

I was age 7, about to turn 8, when the Western adventure series made its debut, and it captured my imagination. Only the character Superman was more inspiring to me. I used to tie a towel around my neck and drape it over my shoulder and down my back like a cape and pretend that I was Zorro (or Superman). At age 35, I looked kinda silly. 🙂 As you know and as others have probably noted, Guy Williams went on to even greater fame playing Professor John Robinson on Lost in Space. Williams was younger than I am now when he died at age 65 of “natural causes.” It always fascinates me that some of the most handsome, athletic, muscular, robust leading men in Hollywood died too young.

Congratulations on completing the A to ZZZZZ (nap time) marathon, dear friend Michele!

    • I forgot to add which modern TV series I follow. My favorites are The Good Wife, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Arrow, The Flash, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Fresh Off the Boat, How To Get Away With Murder and Fargo.

      Thanks, Michele!

        • I was a huge Mad Men fan. Never missed an episode. LOVED the fashion and the retro decor. The cast was incredible and I hated that it had to come to an end… but what a cool ending, huh?
Another good one coming to an end is The Good Wife. Hate to see that one end too.
Love Modern Family. The kids crack me up as they’re so comedic. Great timing on that show. And the facial expressions of the whole cast are priceless.
Downton Abbey: never watched it but I hear I should…

    • What, you mean you’re not still wearing the cape?? 🙂
Loved Guy Williams in Lost in Space. In fact, I just ordered the Lost in Space box set and should receive it sometime this week! Jeffrey alerted me to it as he snagged it at a steal of a price from CD Exchange.

Thanks Shady for all your faithful visits to my blog during the A-Z. I so appreciated all your wonderful comments! You are a good friend!

  4. Hi Michele! Well, we’re at the end of it all! Well done for so faithfully putting up your posts even though many of the shows were not in my ken. I enjoyed your plots descriptions of them, and the other movie ‘devices’ you brought to our attention. Last night I caught up with an episode of Australian Master Chef. Hopefully will do another catch up later … Morgan Freeman’s documentary on God (unsure of it’s full title) is showing here in South Africa, and have been recorded for future watching!!

I’m going to backtrack and comment on the posts I’ve missed. Something about the end of this thing… I have a tougher time keeping pace.

  6. I loved Zorro! 🙂 Guy Williams was an early heartthrob (even then I was into Italians; real name Armando Catalano. He somewhat resembled Errol Flynn, another favourite, but he was Tasmanian not Italian) who also starred in the movie “Captain Sinbad” and the TV series “Lost in Space”.

Current favourite shows would include Castle, Madame Secretary, The Big Bang Theory, Mom, a new one – Lucifer (yes, it’s about the devil), How to Get Away With Murder, Better Call Saul (Breaking Bad prequel) and another brand new one, The Catch. Thank goodness for PVRs! 🙂

Congratulations on finishing the challenge, Michele! This was a great theme choice. Although I’m skipping tomorrow’s BOTB, I will still check out some of the posts next week. Cheers!

    • I love Better Call Saul! I had a hard time keeping up with How To Get Away with Murder and couldn’t keep track of who was guilty and who was doing what. I think I was just always distracted during the show for some reason.
Castle: used to be a loyal viewer but I didn’t like what they did with the relationship between Beckett and Castle. It’s seeming to get a little far-reaching these days so I stopped watching it this last season. Maybe I should give it another try…

Thanks for all your faithful visits and comments. I always enjoy seeing you here!
Congrats on finishing strong. See you for the next BOTB. Get some good rest. XOXO

      • How to Get Away with Murder is one of those shows where you have to pay attention every second, otherwise, you’ll miss something. Yeah; the storylines on Castle are getting a bit far-fetched, but I just love the personalities of all the characters, including Castle’s mom and daughter. Thank you for always visiting me, as well. 🙂 We all need rest now.

  7. Great end to the challenge! I did watch Zorro but only as part of the Mickey Mouse club I think! I rarely watch TV now but like Big Bang Theory and did a marathon watch of Downton Abbey while my husband was out of town. I am looking forward to the brief return of Hell on Wheels for it’s final episodes.

  10. Michele, this is a brilliant recap! I was just over at Jeffrey’s blog (he also featured Zorro), telling him Zorro never really took off in Mexico, but my dad was a huge fan. Then again, he (my dad) grew up in California, so it makes sense 😉 I’m curious about Isabel Allende’s book on the subject… I like her style, so probably it’ll be a cool read. Too bad my dad isn’t around anymore to discuss it with him, though. I think he’d have enjoyed that 🙂

Congratulations on wrapping up the A2Z, Michele! Excellent series all around. I’m sorry I couldn’t visit every day… I wasn’t doing a great job of keeping my head above water, haha. But I enjoyed your posts immensely. And, once again, thank you so, so much for the lovely telling of Bella’s story.
