Battle of the Bands – Can’t You See by Marshall Tucker

It’s time for another Battle of the Bands and today I’m featuring covers of the Marshall Tucker Band’s Can’t You See. Give a listen to the two contenders and vote which one you like best. I’ll post the results in 6 days!

“Can’t You See” is a song written by Toy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band. The song was originally recorded by the band on their 1973 debut album, The Marshall Tucker Band, and released as the album’s first single. It was re-released in 1977 and peaked at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also featured in the Johnny Depp film Blow, the Christopher Walken film Scotland, PA, in a 2011 commercial for Busch Beer and a 2012 ad for tourism in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. A live version of the song is included as the final track on the band’s 1975 album, Searchin’ for a Rainbow.

The song is noted for its flute introduction done by Jerry Eubanks.

Here is the Marshall Tucker Band performing it. This is presented for your enjoyment only as they are not part of the battle. That flute gets me every time! (If you’d like to hear more Marshall Tucker Band music, stop on over to my A-Z Musical Tour of My Life post which features several Marshall Tucker greats).

Several artists did covers of the song, including Waylon Jennings, the Charlie Daniels Band, Hank Williams Jr, Alabama and others. My battle today features covers by Poison and the Zac Brown Band (with Kid Rock):

Poison: Poison is an American hard rock/glam metal band that achieved great commercial success in the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. They covered Can’t You See for their 2007 album Poison’d!, their seventh studio album featuring 14-tracks of recordings of Poison’s favorite rock classics. Nine new tracks recorded in 2007; and five previously released covers make up the album.

Zac Brown Band and Kid Rock: Zac Brown Band is an American country music band based in Atlanta, Georgia, on the Southern Ground Artists label.

The Zac Brown Band, along with Kid Rock, covered “Can’t You See” on their 2010 live benefit album, Pass the Jar. “Pass the Jar – Zac Brown Band and Friends Live (From the Fabulous Fox Theatre In Atlanta)” is the second live album by the American country music band. It was released on May 4, 2010. As of September 2015, the album has sold 526,000 copies in the US.

Here is their cover of Can’t You See:

  1. Hi, Michele!

I am happy to see a BOTB post from you, dear friend. When you didn’t reply to comments on your previous post I began to worry that you were having problems behind the scenes. I hope everything is okay with your parents.

You always manage to present a tough band battle and this one has me torn. I met the Poison guys at their peak in the mid 80s when they came to Tampa Bay with Cinderella and dropped into our studio for interviews. Our cam crew also joined the boys at their show venue and band bus. It was a wild scene, believe you me. At the time I wasn’t a big a fan of Poison, even though they were from back home in Central PA. It seemed to me that their act was more a parody of glam metal than the real thing. Country rock isn’t my favorite style either, but I remember “Can’t You See.”

That brings us to this challenge. When a studio recording battles a live performance, I usually pick the studio sound because the audio pickup at the live show is inferior. However that was not the case in your battle and the result was a fairly level playing field. Zac Brown and Kid Rock do a fine job performing “Can’t You See” in an authentic country rock style, rough, gravel grade vocals and all. The Poison version has more refined lead vocals and contains elements of hard rock and glam rock. The last minute of the track reminds me of Motley Crue’s power ballad “Home sweet Home.” Does Poison’s rendition work? I say yes. Perhaps for the first time ever I am giving Poison their props. Maybe they should continue to make music in this vein because I thoroughly enjoyed their take on “Can’t You See.” I checked out their Poison’d cover album and see that they cover Bowie, the Cars, Kiss and some of my other favorite artists. “Can’t You See” seems to be the best track on the album, though, and I am giving Poison my vote in your contest. Thank you, dear Michele!

    • Glad you think this is a level playing field battle. Happy to hear that! I can only imagine that a meeting with the boys from Poison would’ve been wild and crazy! Thanks for casting your vote and I have you down for Poison.

And you were right: I didn’t get a chance to answer any comments from my last post: we had to call EMS for my mom and she spent the last few days back in the hospital. She had fluid build-up in her lung and had to get it tapped. She just got back home yesterday. Thanks for your concern. Hoping she’ll start feeling better soon. This is really a rough surgery!

  2. Hi, Michelle; This is kind of a tough choice for me as I liked both covers. Slight edge to Zac Brown and Kid Rock, as I thought their version had a bit more pizzazz. Great battle! 🙂

Best wishes to you and your parents. Hope they’re feeling better now.

    • Thanks Debbie. Actually my mom just got home from the hospital yesterday. We had to call EMS for her the other day but she’s back home and resting now. Thanks for your well wishes. Much appreciated.

Happy to hear that you like both my cover choices. Me too! 🙂 Thanks for your vote: I’ll put you down for Zac Brown…

Hope you’re feeling better now! You’ve been in my thoughts…

  3. I’ve got a bit of a love/hate relationship with this song. I like Marshall Tucker Band a lot. I essentially like this song, but it’s like a standard go to jam band song of just about every bar band back in Tennessee and probably just about everywhere else. Back when I used to jam with my friends or just listen while they were playing amongst themselves, invariably the session would turn to this song and it would go on and on for an interminably long long time until it just eventually fizzled away. It kind of drove me nuts at times.

But still it’s a good song and both these versions are decent. Zac Brown puts more punch and feeling into their version so that’s the one I’m going to vote for.

    • To bad that it was overplayed in the bars to give you that love/hate relationship with it but I’m glad you essentially like the song. I’ll put you down for Zac Brown.
      Thanks for stopping by…

  4. Great song choice. I had it on my list of future songs for battles. No worries, plenty of other songs have been covered 🙂
I was impressed with how good Poison sounded, but I love the gravelly sound that Kid Rock and Zac Brown Band put on this song.

Give my vote to Kid Rock and Zac Brown Band.

Glad you liked Poison — and I have your vote down for Zac Brown/Kid Rock. So far they seem to be the frontrunner…

    • Thanks Dixie! I appreciate your kind thoughts and well-wishes. My mom is getting stronger bit by bit, day by day. This open-heart surgery is really a rough recovery. Very lengthy. It has knocked the wind out of her for sure.

Thanks for your vote. I’ve gotcha down for Zac Brown…

  6. Nice song battle today. It’s a difficult choice but I have to go with the Poison version. Not sure I could point to one specific why I liked this over the other version, because both songs were done really well. I’m not a big fan of Kid Rock, so that could be the reason for my ultimate vote.
    Please place vote for Poison.

  7. Michele, I’m so glad I doubled checked my BoTB tracks because I somehow missed you. *phew* I’m going to cut to the chase here, I preferred Poison and give them my vote this round. Their vocals and music arrangement suited the song best. Nice match up, though. I’m saying prayers for your mother. I hope she feels better soon. Blessings to you, my friend!

    • Oh thank you so much Cathy! I really appreciate your prayers for my mom! She’s getting better — tired and weak but that is to be expected after this open-heart surgery. She’s very impatient though and wants to feel better NOW! It’s definitely an exercise in patience…

Thanks for your vote! I have you down for Poison…
      Glad you stopped by! ❤

  8. Yesterday I thought, I wonder how Michele’s parents are? I should email her. Well, now I know. I’m sorry for the tough times. I vote for Poison. They are so raw and perfect for this song. I love Blow–the movie, not the coke.

    Love,

    • Blow was such a great movie! Johnny Depp was fantastic in it.
I’ll put you down for Poison on this one. Thanks for your vote.
Things are going okay on this end. I took my Dad out for lunch and a movie yesterday: we say Michael Moore’s new movie Where to Invade Next. I liked it a lot. If only…

  9. Sister, this is a perfect match up. Three great versions of a great song – a treat to listen to. I’ve got to give my vote to Zac Brown Band and Kid Rock this time.

Sorry to hear that your Mom has been sick! Prayers for her – and you. Take care!

    • Thanks Cherdo! So glad you liked my match-up! This is such a great song. Marshall Tucker is master, for sure, but I think these two covers work well. I’ll put you down for Zac Brown.
And thanks for your prayers for my mom! They are much appreciated. ❤

  10. I love The Marshall Tucker Band. I’ve even seen them in person a couple of times. Great stuff. Neither of these guys really did ‘Can’t You See’ justice, IMO (NO FLUTE, are you kidding me?), but I liked the Zac Brown/Kid Rock version better.

    • The flute is definitely Marshall Tucker’s signature for the song. LOVE that intro! I bet that was a great concert!
Thanks for your vote: I’ve got you down for Zac Brown…

  11. MICHELE ~
You’ve got a great Battle going here. Votes are falling both ways, and I’m about to tighten up the competition a wee li’l bit…

To be honest, I’ve never been wild about this song. I don’t mind it, but I feel it’s too repetitious and I have never understood its popularity. To me it’s kind of a C+ song. If it comes on the radio, I won’t change it, but I’ll be hoping they don’t play ‘Free Bird’ next, because then I WILL find another station.

I thought the Zac Brown version was OK but a bit too much like the original. But POISON really surprised me! It didn’t sound like the “hair metal” Poison I’ve heard in the past. And, actually (don’t hate me) I liked their cover better’n the MTB original.

Hey, glad to hear your Ma is improving. She had open heart surgery? If I may ask, was it due to blocked arteries decreasing blood flow? If so, I’ve got an A-list dietary suggestion for that which ABSOLUTELY WORKS WONDERS!

    • Lol! I would never change the station while Free Bird was playing! 🙂 But I will admit: the song does get overplayed for sure.
Thanks for your vote. It does surprise me that you like Poison’s version better than the original. Of course that’s because I really love the MTB version.

My mom didn’t have blocked arteries, thankfully. She had her aortic valve replaced and her mitral valve repaired. The day before she was supposed to come home, she coded (flatlined) and her heart was beating way too slow so they ended up putting in a pacemaker. Thank God that all happened while she was still at the hospital because had that happened at home, we could’ve lost her. She definitely had her angels working overtime!
I am curious about your A-list dietary suggestion. Please share. We could all benefit from it, I’m sure…

  12. OMG, now THIS is a battle after my own heart! I love The Marshall Tucker Band. I love Poison. I love the Zac Brown Band. And I have a love-hate relationship with Kid Rock, but that’s neither here nor there.

I was hypnotized by Poison’s surprisingly laid-back cover, but ultimately – despite its amazing guitar work – found it slightly underwhelming compared to Zac/Kid’s rousing version. This may be a bit unfair since one is recorded and one was recorded live, and nothing compares to the energy of a live show. But I gotta go with Zac Brown Band/Kid Rock on this one.

    GREAT BATTLE.

Thanks for your vote. I have you down for Zac Brown/Kid Rock. I think they are going to come out the winners. I haven’t counted yet but they were the overwhelming favorite so far…
