Lost & Found Blogfest and Battle of the Bands combo: K is for Kiss

Today is a special edition of Battle of the Bands because I’m combining it with the Lost & Found Valentine’s Edition blogfest, hosted by Arlee BirdGuilie CastilloElizabeth Seckman,Yolanda ReneeDenise Covey, and Alex J Cavanaugh. The blogfest is about love lost or love found. I’ve chosen to reprise a piece I wrote a few years ago during the A-Z Blogging Challenge. It’s a perfect piece for this blogfest and since it didn’t get much readership the last time, maybe this time will be different. Following this will be my Battle of the Bands, which ties in nicely to my piece.

I wrote this about a mistake I made a few years ago. It’s titled “K is for Kiss”:

How I used to long for your kiss. Your soft lips knew how to speak to my body. Your kiss ignited my soul and set my heart ablaze. kissWe fell in love, though we knew we shouldn’t. All the hours and days and nights spent together turned the heat up on our love, especially those nights in front of the fireplace, the sultry sounds of Motown playing in the background and our love smoldering in the hot embers of our passion.

We knew this couldn’t last, but we were in too deep. The more time we spent together, the harder it got to be apart. We were hooked. And it was so amazing. It scared the shit out of both of us because no way could this last. It was too good to be true.

pencil sketch: You're the Best by Naleme

“You’re the Best” by Naleme (c2012-2014)

You used to joke when we’d be out somewhere that people could see us together and know immediately that we weren’t married because we were so happy! That was probably a true statement. We were, after all, living a fantasy. But God, it was an incredible whirlwind.

And then reality hit. Like an unanticipated tornado. I’ll never forget that night. You paged me, I pulled over to use a pay phone on the side of a downtown street. It was misting rain but I didn’t care. I dialed and you picked up the phone. I think you started the conversation with “I’m sorry” and I knew. I felt a pit in my stomach. My hands were shaking. And as if on cue, the rain started to pound harder, just like my heart.

“Why?”

You said you had tried, but when you told them you were leaving, your kids cried and begged you to stay. And you said you owed it to them to stay. You had to at least try to make your marriage work.

“So this is it?” I asked.

“Yes.”

I started to cry. I could hear the anguish in your voice. I know you heard the devastation in mine. The rain poured on me and I don’t know which was coming down harder, it or my tears. Alone in the Rain gif (http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t350/anthonymuthu2008/AloneinteRain.gif) I stood at the phone booth, crying into the phone, while raindrops splattered down around me, just like my world at that moment. I heard you softly say, “I’m sorry” and then you gently placed the phone down on the receiver. I stood there holding the phone to my ear, the rain washing the salty tears from my face, listening to pellets of water pinging off the metal booth and the stinging sound of the dial tone as the finality sunk in. It was almost cinematic, that scene.

I heard you broke your sobriety after that night. And for that I’m so very sorry. I’m sorry for all of it. What a horrible path we chose to walk together, the whole torrid affair. Five lives crushed. I pray for forgiveness in one breath and yet in another I’m remembering that first time. I know it’s you who calls me and hangs up sometimes. I can tell by how gently the phone hangs up. It’s okay. I think of you too. Maybe in another life.

A few legitimate relationships later and I’ve found that I’m much happier alone. I decided I actually hate being in love. Love fucks with my head too much. It messes with my peace of mind. And that is something I simply can’t tolerate anymore. No way. Peace and freedom – they’re everything to me now.

Although I miss your amazing kiss, the ones I get now are of a whole other kind…and they’re ones that keep me sane. These kisses are way better for me. My heart has never been more full. I guess God forgave me after all.

Now for my Battle of the Bands:

The Song: (If Loving You is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right:

This song was written by Stax Records songwriters Homer Banks, Carl Hampton and Raymond Jackson. It has been performed by many singers, most notably by Luther Ingram, whose version topped the R&B chart for four weeks and rose to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972.

The song is about an adulterous love affair, told from the point of view of either the mistress or the cheating spouse, depending on the gender of the performer. Regardless, both parties involved express their desire to maintain the affair, while at the same time acknowledging that the relationship is morally wrong.

Although it was first recorded by The Emotions and Veda Brown, those recordings were never released. Besides Luther Ingram, other notable singers to cover it include Isaac Hayes, Rod Stewart, Percy Sledge, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Barbara Mandrell, David Ruffin, LeAnn Rimes Renée Geyer, Ramsey Lewis, reggae singer Alton Ellis, Tom Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Nathan Cavaleri and Rania Zeriri. (Source: Wikipedia)

Here is the version by Luther Ingram. THIS IS NOT PART OF THE BATTLE; JUST WANTED YOU TO HEAR THE SONG AS MOST PEOPLE KNOW IT:

For today’s battle, I chose to pit LeAnn Rimes against Rod Stewart. Which one do you like better and why?

Contender #1:  LeAnn Rimes:

Contender #2:  Rod Stewart:

  1. I definitely have to go with Rod Stewart on this one. He’s just got such a great voice. I forgot how good he is. I’m sorry you went through such a rough loss of love but I think your picture shows…you came through with one handsome (fluffy) and way better love!!

  2. Hi, Michele!

I broke away from family matters to experience your BOTB and I’m so glad I didn’t miss it. This is one sensational post! Your story certainly is like a scene from a movie. I’m feelin’ it! It reminds me of times when I was unfaithful. Dang – why is the rush so intense when you are cheating and know that it’s wrong? I also appreciate your related song selection. It brings to mind two other songs about infidelity, “Slip Away” by Clarence Carter, and “Me and Mrs. Jones” by Billy Paul. I well remember Luther’s version of “If Loving You Is Wrong.” I enjoyed LeAnn’s cover, but not as much as the one by the Rodster. I owned his album Foot Loose & Fancy Free and this was one of my favorite tracks. “If Loving You Is Wrong” has special meaning for me because it is linked to memories of a four year relationship with a woman that began when I was still married to Mrs. Shady #1. I remember many nights snuggling by the fire with my new love interest while we listened to “If Loving You Is Wrong.” For the second time today, I cast my vote for Rod Stewart.

I agree with you, Michele. Nothing beats a dog’s sloppy wet kiss on your cheek – nothing.

    • Thanks so much Shady! I’m glad you liked my post! I’m glad it had meaning for you. Ah, memories… Right? 🙂 And there is definitely something alluring about that rush!
Oh, Slip Away is such a great song! I’m listening to it right now. What a classic! Me & Mrs. Jones is another awesome song. Thanks for bringing those up.
And thanks for your vote: I’ll put you down for Rod Stewart. I’m torn as to how I’m going to vote…
Hey, I appreciate you breaking away from the family obligations to hang with me at my blog here today! Much appreciated…

  3. Maybe you’ve found a calling in romance writing. That was a well told story though a tragic one. Some mistakes can seem so wonderful while we are making them. They can change us in mighty big ways.

Great song. I went ahead and listened to Rod Stewart’s version even though I decided that LeAnn Rimes couldn’t be beat on her version. That intro to Rod’s version drew me in though. He does an excellent job with the song, but still I prefer LeeAnn’s vocals and the playing is so crisp and soulful.

Give my vote to LeeAnn Rimes.

Thanks for joining in with the Lost & Found blog hop. It tied in well with BOTB didn’t it.

Ya know, I never gave romance writing a thought. Thanks for planting that seed…
Yes, some mistakes can be so amazing while we’re making them…

Thanks for your vote. I’ll put you down for LeAnn.

  4. Excellent battle! I’m going with LeAnn Rimes; as much as I love Mr. Stewart, she won this one for me… More upbeat but somehow also more intense in transmitting that sense of being torn (yeah, been there). And your K is for Kiss piece is beautiful, Michele. Thank you for republishing it for the Lost & Found hop… The passion and the pain come through loud and clear 🙂

  5. Oh my goodness. Your writing is beautiful and haunting! I’m so touched! I, too, had a lover. We both had spouses. And yet we longed to be with each other. Barbara Mandrel’s version of this song was popular at the time of our affair. I am so sorry yours ended the way it did! My man left his wife (no kids) and I left my husband (took two kids with me) and we became one. For the next 38 years of my life this man was my soul mate. Don’t give up on LOVE! Your soulmate is out there somewhere.
My vote goes to Leann Rimes. I love a woman’s version of this song for reasons stated above. I had never heard anyone else sing it but Barbara. Wow Luther did give it justice! And who doesn’t love Rod. I love for Leann however.

    • Paula, thank you so much for your kind words about my writing! I so appreciate that. So glad that you were moved by my piece. That means a lot to me.
Wow, you have an unusual ending to an affair: you’re very lucky that it turned out the way it did. I’m glad you found your soulmate. You have 38 years of memories to keep you going…

It is interesting to listen to this song from both perspectives, male and female, isn’t it? Thanks for your vote: I’ll put you down for LeAnn.

Thanks again for stopping by. And for sharing your story… XOXO

  6. Michele, I really enjoyed and, sympathized with your post. I could feel that rain, and the pain you longed for it to cover. Well written piece.

For the battle I had to go with Rod Stewart. I loved the instrumental backing him.

Thanks for your vote too. I’ll put you down for LeAnn. I still don’t know how I’m going to vote because I like both these versions but I’m leaning toward LeAnn…

  7. Your story is beautifully written but very very sad from every perspective.

You BATTLE is a ‘no brainer’ for me. LeAnn’s voice just does not lend itself to this song in my ears. Give my vote to Rod, love the instrumentation in his version, especially the intro.

  8. Michele, oooo, your story is fabulous! Fiction or not, it’s some kind of great writing and so perfect with your song tie-in. My hat is off to you, lady! You matched up two great artists. Leann does a good job feeling the words through her cover, but Rod’s husky vocals and slow approach with singing his cover made me feel his pain more. So, I’m giving my vote to Rod! Nicely done!!

    • Thanks Cathy! I really appreciate your compliments! I wish it were fiction! It did indeed happen just that way…
I’m glad you liked my cover versions. I know I’m going back and forth on who to vote for. I lean one way and then I lean the other… But I have you down for Rod. Thanks for your vote…and again, for your kind words. XOXO

  9. Wow, what a story. I appreciate you sharing. I’m currently single, for the most part, not by choice. My wife left me too, possibly for another person, though she won’t admit it. It can be tough to deal with at times. Of course, that’s all of 10 years ago, so it’s way in the past now. Besides, blogging keeps me distracted. Which is probably why I love it so much.
BOTB – I have to give my vote to Leann Rimes. It works well for me. Rod is a great singer but I don’t think this song of his was much to my liking.

    • But aren’t you happy now, being single? There’s a lot to be said for being single, I think…
Thanks for stopping by Jeffrey. I’ll put you down for LeAnn. 🙂

  10. I love that picture of you. YES. You found a different love. But as you said to me unconditional. I thoroughly enjoyed your story. And I am so sorry about that sad situation. K Is For Kiss is but a memory now. Your fur baby will keep you happy and busy. Thanks for writing it. I’d say that it helped to write about it. That’s what they say anyway. I’d be willing to bet they lost him anyway.

I have to go with Rod Stewart. He has such a powerful set of vocal chords. Thanks for the visit.

  11. Doesn’t it seem as if nature always obliges a heartache with a show of her own majesty? Compelling atmosphere; I felt as if I was in the phone booth.
Though it’s quite a stretch to imitate Luther, and I truly assumed Leann would torch it up just right, my vote goes to Rod Stewart for his signature rasp;-)

  12. This was beautifully written because there is no wrong or right…it just is. I love the non-judgemental way you wrote this and can feel the passion and the pain. Great song and, although LeAnn Rimes has a powerful voice, I did care for the styling of the song with that basic beat. I really liked Rod Stewart’s version. His voice is perfect for this song and I love the way the music is done much better so he gets my vote

  13. Wow. What a sad story. My mom told me that she heard this while she was still (unhappily) married to my dad: What a shame to be married to the wrong one when the right one comes along. It made her see that she was just biding time in a relationship that died a long time ago. And she didn’t want to meet the right one while still married. So, she approached my dad about divorce and he readily agreed. And that was it.

I wish your fellow had recognized his own unhappiness within his marriage and tried to fix it (thereby not involving you in his life) or gotten out (so that he was free to be with you when you met). Alas, it didn’t work out that way and it sounds like everyone was hurt.

As for the battle, I preferred LeAnn Rimes.

    • That sure would’ve been the best way to handle that. But in the end, it probably wouldn’t have worked for us anyway, in hindsight. Funny thing, after all that heartache…
Thanks for your vote: I have you down for LeAnn. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story. I’m glad your mom did it the way she did. That was smart…and moral.
