Battle of the Bands – Dr. John’s Right Place, Wrong Time

It’s time for another Battle of the Bands and today I’m featuring the Dr. John song Right Place, Wrong Time. Give a listen to the two contenders and vote which one you like best. I’ll post the results in 6 days!

Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack (born November 21, 1940), better known by the stage name Dr. John (also Dr. John Creaux, or Dr. John the Night Tripper), is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and guitarist, whose music combines blues, pop, jazz as well as zydeco, boogie woogie and rock and roll. He’s mostly known by his New Orleans R&B roots.

His song Right Place, Wrong Time went to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart back in 1973. It was from his In the Right Place album. Crank this one up!  (this is not part of the battle; for your information and enjoyment only):

The song was covered by BB King (with Bonnie Raitt):

Does BB King need any introduction? Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015), known by his stage name B.B. King, was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Rolling Stone ranked King No. 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname “The King of the Blues.”

King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.

King died at the age of 89 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease along with congestive heart failure and diabetic complications.  (Source: Wikipedia)

Here is his version of Right Place, Wrong Time, along with Bonnie Raitt:

The song was also covered by Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies

Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies are a band from Nashville, Tennessee, USA, which was formed in the early 1990s. The band embraced a southern boogie style which led to comparisons with groups such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Collective Soul and Cry of Love. The band played at a blues club near Vanderbilt University before being signed to Atlantic Records in 1993. The band drew its name from one of Gary Larson’s comics, The Far Side.

Their album Big Wheel, released in 1998, contained the cover Right Place, Wrong Time. Their version of “Right Place, Wrong Time” was used in the Malcolm in the Middle episode “Home Alone 4” and included in Songs from Malcolm in the Middle, the soundtrack to the television series which was released on November 21, 2000. 1. Hi, Michele!

You never make it easy. For today’s battle you managed to find two excellent covers of “Right Place, Wrong Time.” In the end, I had to vote for the first version because it gave me two music industry giants for the price of one – blues legend BB King and veteran blues, folk and country singer/guitarist Bonnie Raitt. BB and Bonnie have street cred to burn and they are well suited to the material. Their collaboration on “Right Place” resulted in a classic version of the Dr. John song. The Wheelies did a great job but I liked BB & Bonnie even more. They get my vote.

    Thank you, dear friend Michele!

    • Thanks Shady! I’m glad you liked both of them! I’ll put you down for BB and Bonnie! They are two greats, huh? I love that Dr. John song: I could play it over and over and over!

  2. I’ve never cared for this song and the Screamin’ Cheetos don’t win me over–it’s not terrible at all, but not something I’d care to listen to often. The guitar break is good.

King and Raitt’s version is my favorite of all three–better than the original. That’s where I’m placing my vote. It’s slick as that greasy kid stuff for a guy’s hair, smooth as honey infused Jack Daniels, and funky as Beale Street in Memphis. Good sounds.

I have you done for BB & Bonnie. Thanks for stopping by Lee…

  3. “Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies”. What a cool name! 😀 Their version was fun and toe-tapping, but for pure listening pleasure, I have to go with B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. So smooth! Interesting battle, Michele!

  4. Michele – the original has been a favorite for a long time, but I think Bonnie and BB just replaced them, in my mind. Wheelies aren’t my style unless it’s driving on ice and snow. That’s fun! But I think this will be a good battle.

    • I remember fondly doing donuts in icy parking lots back in Buffalo where I’m from. Those were the good old days. Thanks for the memory!!!
Interesting to know that BB and Bonnie have replaced Dr John as your favorite version! I have you down with a vote for them…

  5. I remember Dr. John! I loved that song. I vote for BB King because he’s B.B. King, and we lost him last year. He could do no wrong. I like The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies, but the music overwhelms the vocals, especially during the first part of the song.

    Love,

  6. I give my vote to BB King and Bonnie Raitt-I love the sexiness they bring to this song and their voices work well together. I am not too keen on Screamin’ even if they love The Far Side

  7. MICHELE, it completely figures that Lee doesn’t like this song to begin with, because I think it’s a GREAT song! I’ve always loved it, and I’m a Dr. John fan in general. (Have you ever heard his 1989 album ‘IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD’? It’s really wonderful. Check it out at Spotify or YouTube, or wherever great albums are played for free.)

Well, this Battle was kaput inside of 30 seconds. I think the B.B. KING / BONNIE RAITT cover is almost as good as the Dr. John original… almost, not quite though. And the Cheating Willie Screamies (or whatever they’re called) basically just took a great song and ruined it.

This is one of those times when I would have put the original (Dr. John) up against a cover (B.B. & Bonnie) just to see what happens. You found a really good cover that might have given the good Doctor a run for his money and resulted in a competitive BOTB installment. OH WELL (as my January 15th BOTB song sez).

    • Yeah, this is a shit battle for sure. Will be my first shut out but I guess I have to screw it up sometime in order to learn. I never thought of pitting the original against a cover. I know others have but since I never have, I didn’t even give that a thought as an option. You’re right: that would’ve made a much better battle. Oh well. Ain’t the first time I’ve ever effed something up….won’t be the last…

I too love the Dr John song. I mean it when I say, I can listen to it over and over again. It never gets old in my book. I never heard his Sentimental Mood album but will check it out. He has some interesting history for sure.

      Thanks for stopping by Stephen

  8. Well, you’re not going to have a total shutout, because (and as a HUGE BB King fan – we share a birthday!) I am voting for the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. I love BB and like Bonnie well enough, but for some reason this duet just didn’t do it for me. Or maybe it’s because I liked that they went totally different with it. I don’t think they ruined it all; I feel like they just gave it the flavor of a completely different generation.

    • Wow! You have saved my battle! This was going to be my first ever shutout. Thank you!!! 😀
I’m glad you found something redeeming about the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies. I think only one other person found them likable.
Thanks for stopping by and voting!!

  10. I hate that I’m not gonna help with this shutout, but I love BB King and Bonnie Raitt (independently and specifically in this song!). They knocked it out of the park. Really excellent. The Screamin’ dudes didn’t do much for me. Sorry:(

  11. I’m in love with this battle!!! Michele, I was so sure I’d vote for BB King… I’d never heard of the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies (I mean, seriously? 😀 ) — but they blew me away from the first note. Love the electric twang in that guitar riff. Love the dude’s voice. It got me dancing. It feels so wrong to vote against BB King… I’m so sorry 😦 Yep. Screaming Cheetah Wheelies did it for me.

    Excellent picks, Michele!
