Ay-yi-yi, it’s going to be one of those days. First the day started out scary because one of my guest dogs, sweet Nikita, was having a hard time walking when I took everyone out for their morning potties. She couldn’t stand and kept sitting down, biting at her leg. She’d take a half a step and then go down again. She finally made it into the house and up onto the couch. She refused to eat breakfast, which isn’t like her. I thought I’d have to take her in to see the vet but soon afterward, she made a complete recovery and was walking fine. Maybe her foot or leg fell asleep and that’s why she was having a hard time walking? I’m just grateful that she’s okay.

Then at 8:00, a new dog arrived. Cortez. She’s just as her mom described her: a Lab in a Greyhound body. This girl is into everything! She’s very curious and loves toys. I have a whole big basket full of toys here in the living room so she’s in heaven. She settles in nicely and I’m off to take a shower.
I get out of the shower and hear some noise that didn’t sound familiar so I hurry and dry off and come out to see what’s going on. Well, Miss Cortez has broken into the treat-bin and she and my Luca are having a high ol’ time going to town on the snacks. I turned the treat bin upright and see just how much they have eaten and freak out. Of course they ate almost two entire bags of treats, not the crunchy kind, which wouldn’t have been bad, but the greasy kind, the kind that I only give one or two max because they have a relatively high fat content (in comparison to crunchy biscuits). These weren’t tiny bags either. Both had been purchased at Costco so you know how big they are, right?
Then I turn around and look into the living room and what do I see: a puddle of pee sprawling through the grout lines in the tile. I think Cortez did this one too. So I shoo everyone outside and clean up the pee and mop the floor.
Then I get everybody back in the house except the two knuckleheads who devoured the chicken and bison jerkeys. I grab a bottle of peroxide and walk them out to the dog run where I proceed to make them throw up. I had to make them vomit all those treats up. All that fat could’ve caused an attack of pancreatitis and that’s really bad! Not to mention a really expensive trip to the vet.
So both of them vomit up all they ate. And it was a lot! I could tell who ate what: Cortez ate all the chicken jerkeys and Luca got the bison jerkeys. They each threw up about four to five times before it was all out of them. Now they’re just sacked out in the living room, probably dreaming about jerkey…

Luckily i’ts been very quiet, except for Cortez getting into a tote bag that was sitting on a chair in the living room. She sure is a curious devil! 🙂

Well, I spoke too soon. Cortez just knocked over two long fluourescent light bulbs that were tucked in a corner in the garage. Naturally they broke and there was glass right where the dogs walk to come into the house. Out with the vacuum cleaner to sweep up all the glass…. This dog is going to give me a run for my money, I can tell already. She’s only been here 10 hours so far! 🙂

Yikes! I sure hope the rest of the day is more peaceful and serene. That’s some smart and quick thinking, with the peroxide. And people think this is any easy job. Little do they know……

Little do they know is right Debbie! I know you know! Yes, that trick with the peroxide has come in handy on more than one occasion. My vet told me to do it when my Harry ate 9 tampons… Never a dull moment!

That’s a lot of tampons! Some dogs will eat anything. I knew a Lab who ate a whole pile of cigarette butts that somebody had dumped out of their car ashtray. Disgusting. 😛 Yes, I sure do know how it is. Once, during my busiest season (spring break), we had a doggie flu epidemic. One after the other started throwing up, everywhere! Fortunately, it only lasted a few days. Never a dull moment is right. 🙂 Good thing we love them, yes?

I can’t imagine having a doggie flu outbreak! Oh no. That had to be miserable. My three dogs ended up with some kind of virus and had diarrhea for months!!! It was awful. They’d get better then it would come back again. My vet was stumped and we just kept them on high doses of Flagyl and lots of chicken and rice. And I lost a bunch of grass in the dogrun because I was bleaching all the spots where they had pooped in order to try to kill the virus. What a mess. I was pulling my hair out on that one.
Oh, and the same dog who peed and broke into the treat bin? She just knocked over two flourescent bulbs in the garage, which broke of course. Lot of skinny little chards of glass to vacuum up. She’s with me until Monday. It’s only been 10 hours so far… Ut oh. I’ll be on my toes for sure with this one!
And yes, so good that we love them no matter what… 🙂

WOW!! you have had a crazy day. Hope things go better for you tomorrow!! Missy likes to chew pieces off of her toys, but I don’t think she swallows them because I find the pieces on the carpet.. I didn’t know that about peroxide. How much do you have to give them?

With Luca it only took 2 or 3 capfuls. Just fill the cap that comes on top of the bottle and open their mouths and pour it in, then close their mouths right away so they swallow it. With Cortez it took more. I gave her 2 capfuls at first, then another capful and still nothing. So I opened her mouth and poured some in (probably another few capfuls). Still nothing. Then I gave her 2 more capfuls and finally she threw up. So it just depends on the dog. When my Harry ate 9 tampons, my vet had me pour half a bottle down his throat and said if he didn’t throw up in a few minutes to give him the rest of the bottle. Thankfully I only had to do the half-bottle.
It was definitely a day. Not sure if you read the other comments but Cortez broke two florescent bulbs in the garage at the end of the day. She’s a handful! 🙂

OMG – how scary, and what an ordeal! I never knew about the peroxide, either. I just read through all the other comments, so I’ll know what to do – thanks for that info! Wow, you sure have your hands full, I’m not sure I could handle all that! You sure are a good mommy! Hope you have some peace now for a while! 🙂

Thanks Lynn. Well, it’s 8:00pm and I just had the dogs outside for their final poops of the night. I’m heading to bed. Cortez has a muzzle on. I don’t trust her to be good while I’m sleeping! 🙂 Hoping for an uneventful day tomorrow…

Oh, man… You had your hands full yesterday, didn’t you? Hope today is easy and lovely calm… Though, yeah, with dogs you can never get too comfortable 😉 I’d never heard of the peroxide trick, by the way—thanks for that! I’ll keep a bottle handy, just in case someone eats something they shouldn’t. (Tampons… OMG.)

You’re so right: you can never get too comfortable when you have a houseful of dogs! The peroxide trick is handy to have: just be sure you don’t ever use it to make them vomit up anything sharp, like hard plastic or chicken bones. They could rupture or tear the stomach or esophagus when coming up…

It’s actually easy to make a dog throw up. You just pour a few capfuls of peroxide down their throat and within a few minutes they’re vomiting. A trick I learned from my vet…

Oh Cortez sounds like a puppy and loving to get into everything. I hope he was not hurt when he knocked over those bulbs. That is a messy clean-up-not only the bulbs but the vomit. I hate it when they throw up and then eat it again-ewwwwww! I will have to remember Peroxide for my doggie. My Katie, the black lab, would try and get into everything. I placed empty pop cans with pennies in them and lined them all up on the counter which did the trick. She hated the noise. One Christmas I bought (I do every year) some Tickleberries-they are chocolate covered fruit-raspberries, strawberries, blueberries. I had just separated from my ex and had put these treats in a little bag for each stocking. When I came home, my Katie ate all my tickleberries! My friend still laughs because I called her crying that Katie ate my tickleberries(she had no idea what they were). Thankfully she didn’t get sick-happy as a lark. She knew that she wasn’t supposed to do that though. She hid from me and wouldn’t look at me. It is that doggie look that makes your heart melt even though you are upset with them

I never heard of tickleberries! They sound really yummy. It’s a good thing you have a big Lab because chocolate is poison for dogs. She’s so lucky that she didn’t get sick!
That’s a neat idea with the pop can and pennies. Never thought of that! Thanks for the idea.
And yes, those doggie looks and their guilty eyes do warm your heart! 🙂

Oh gosh Tickleberries are very yummy:) I go to the One of a Kind Craft show every year in Toronto and buy them there. My beautiful lab, Katie, is now in heaven with my dad but she lived to be 13 and was always a happy doggie. Oh yes-Pop cans worked wonders. If she was doing something wrong, I had one with me and would shake it and that would be the end of her shenanigans

Happy doggies are so special. I love to see a happy dog! My Luca is one of those. His tail is ALWAYS wagging. He’s just a happy dog, plain and simple. Love it!

They don’t use to eat bad things, but a good idea to have in the house.
Dogs are not allowed to eat bones from chicken, rabbit or pig. They can easily crush their stomachs.

Right, the bones get too soft and can splinter. I’m not sure if peroxide works with cats. You would have to check with your vet.
