Blood, Boobs and Carnage

Blood Boobs Carnage Blogfest

This post is part of the Blood, Boobs and Carnage Blogfest. The blogfest is hosted by Alex Cavanaugh (who came up with the name) and Heather Gardener. The rules are simple: On May 18, 2015, post about a movie, television show, book, or all three that falls into the category of Blood, Boobs, and Carnage. (Or just Blood and Carnage or other mixture.) It can be any genre that fits the bill – fantasy, science fiction, action, adventure, western, thriller, etc. Post the badge and visit other participants.

Sounds fun. So I joined up, along with 70 other people.

When I read the word “carnage” the first scene that popped into my head was the ending scene from the critically acclaimed AMC series, Breaking Bad.

I didn’t get into Breaking Bad until the final season. I binge-watched all the other seasons and, like millions of others, was completely hooked. In fact, I was even a “Breaking Baddict”: I won a Breaking Bad Beaker through the show’s contest (the contest was featured either on the show site or the show’s Facebook page, can’t remember now). Here’s my keepsake beaker:

Breaking Bad Beaker from AMC

The final scene was a one-man carnage, a bullet-strewn endgame perpetrated by the sheer genius of Walter White, a once meek and mild-mannered chemistry teacher who, through a chain reaction much like that in chemistry, morphed into the villain for whom we rooted and cheered. (Actually, I rooted for Walt but I, like many others, moreso wanted to see Jesse come out a winner).

The New York Times article on the series finale of Breaking Bad summed it up like this: “Walter White died of course, but first he ran the table of revenge, settling score after score with mathematical precision. He went out with a big finish: his ingeniously rigged machine gun mowed down the entire Aryan Brotherhood gang in a fantastical killing spree that was almost like a scene from a Quentin Tarantino movie.” Yes it was!!

It was a great scene. So good that even during the airing of the finale (aptly titled “Felina”), I re-watched from the moment right before the car trunk pops open until the dust settles, oh, probably three times before settling in for the rest of the ending. I loved Walter’s foresight and genius. The rigged machine gun was purely brilliant and a total surprise that the viewers didn’t see coming. I didn’t anyway. Did you?

The execution of the ending was peppered with fabulous shots of the aftermath: the machine gun in the trunk still rotating as a small fire burned through the riddled rear quarter panel of the car; the Neo Nazi who was playing with the remote lounge chair, now dead, his body continuing to go up and down to the sound of the automatic chair motor in the otherwise eerily quiet scene.

And the final song was a perfect pick for the storyline: Badfinger’s Baby Blue kicks in with the lyrics “Guess I got what I deserved” as the camera watches Walt spending the final moments of his life in seeming introspection; the lyrics “a special kind of love” kicks in as he fondles the cooking mask and strokes the meth lab’s sleek equipment. Exceptional choice for the final tune!

Although there aren’t any boobs my pick, there is blood and carnage. Here are a few of the final minutes of the critically acclaimed series, from the finale episode “Felina”, chronologically in three separate videos:

Felina: Walt and Jesse Say Goodbye (aka The Shootout Scene):

Felina: Jesse kills Todd:

Felina: Final Scene (Baby Blue):

Did you see this before today? Were you a Breaking Bad fan? What did you think of the way the series ended?

  1. I’ve heard so much about this show and maybe have to stream it if I ever get streaming service hooked up. Never saw any episodes which is the same for any of the acclaimed or popular TV shows–just don’t watch that much TV.

Sounds like a good pick though. I like a undermanned battle fought against bigger odds but done with ingenuity. And a show that ends with a Badfinger song has a good musical pick. “Baby Blue” is a great song from a great album. Good BBC pick.

    • Thanks Lee. It’s one of those shows that is addictive: I got both my mom and dad hooked on it and they binge-watched it too. Hope you get streaming soon. My local cable company has Netflix built into their on-demand, which is nice. I no longer have to use my Apple TV to get Netflix.
Thanks for stopping by today. Have fun with the BB&C. Oh, and I have to tell you: that song, Look for a Star, is stuck in my head right now! It keeps playing and playing. Ha!

  2. Nice beaker! I haven’t watched the show yet, but now we can binge the whole thing. I had heard about the ending though. Great choice even w/o boobs! 🙂

  3. I know of the show and have seen parts of it but it is just too negative for my taste. I love the actor and I know it is well acted and well written…maybe one day I will try again

    • If you want to try it again, start with the very first episode. I was hooked as soon as I saw that. Thanks for stopping by today!

  4. Perfect choice for the BBC Blogfest, Michele! 😀 Hubby and I only got turned on to Breaking Bad last fall and binge-watched it on Netflix. I always thought it was ironic that Walt did not die from the cancer. And poor Jesse! I really felt sorry for him and was glad he escaped, in the end. Isn’t it funny how he always called Walt “Mr. White”? I loved the way Walt took care of Lydia . Excellent song choice for the end, as well!

    • I binge watched it on Netflix too. Ya gotta love Netflix! So worth the price of admission…
I loved Jesse! I’m so glad how his storyline ended. And Lydia: arrrgh, she got on my nerves. So glad she went out the way she did too: classic to use her stevia to take her out.
      Thanks for stopping by Debbie!

  5. It’s great that you won the beaker! I have friends at work that would kill for that beaker. 🙂 I watched and enjoyed the first season, but I could tell it would be about the disintergration of the character and opted out of the rest.

    • hmm, that’s interesting that you opted not to watch the whole series. I have come to find that I much prefer binge-watching series rather than investing season after season in real time. Seems to get to the satisfaction so much quicker…

  6. That’s what you call “over kill.” I was so glad Jesse survived his association with Mr. White. He deserved his life. Walt got what was due. So did Todd. Man, makes you not trust any polite, clean cut kid, huh?!

  7. We started the series and barely into it when we jumped ship to watch something else. We plan to finish it and much to our surprise liked what we saw despite what the show revolves around. Anywho, I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. So, I’m not gonna watch the clip for now. You captured the essences of the BB&C blogfest with this post! Thanks for stopping by, Michele!

  8. My husband was a big fan because it took place in Albuquerque and we lived there for 4 years, so he knew many of the locations. I did watch the last show with him, just to see Walt get his.

  9. BB is a great pick for this. I was kind of weird about BB. I watched the entire series, but I didn’t actually like it much. I mean, obviously I liked it enough to keep watching, but overall I just wasn’t as much of a die hard fan as most people who watched it. The humor was kind of lost on me, I think. Anyway, totally can see it for this blogfest, though. Great post. Thanks for stopping by mine. 😀

  10. GoT is my favorite show, as I said. Bout Breaking Bad is my 2nd favorite of all time- it is literally the only show I can think of that started on an all-time high and stayed there through every episode, every season, every plot twist, every “OMG!” moment until the very very final scene. Brilliantly written, acted, produced and filmed it’s one of the greatest television accomplishments of all time. GREAT choice!!!
